Sanjay Arora, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from Tamil Nadu’s 1988 batch, was named the new Police commissioner of Delhi by the Central government on Sunday. From Monday, August 1, Arora, who is also the incumbent director-general of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), would assume over as commissioner of the Delhi Police.
“Police division, MHA, dated July 31, 2022, has sent the competent authority’s approval for Sanjay Arora’s inter-cadre deputation from Tamil Nadu Cadre to AGMUT Cadre. Sanjay Arora is appointed as the new Delhi Police Commissioner by the approval. The order will be effective from August 1, 2022, or the date of taking over command, whichever comes first, and continuing until further orders. This order is being issued with the appropriate authority’s consent”, said B G Krishnan, Director of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.
Farewell to Rakesh Asthana as he bids adieu to being a Police Commissioner .
Sanjay Arora is set to replace Gujrat- cadre IPS officer Mr. Rakesh Asthana as chief of Delhi police. All of the special CPs, JCPs, additional CPs, and DCPs received a message from the special commissioner of police (headquarters) on Sunday.
The message stated that “a farewell procession will be held at Parade Ground, New Police Lines, in honor of CP, Delhi, Rakesh Asthana. One inspector, two sub-inspectors, two head-constables, and four constables from every district are required to attend the parade. All officers must arrive at the parade ground by 3:00 p.m. A peaked cap and cross belt are required under the uniform dress code. The goodbye event will begin at 5.30 p.m. in Adarsh Hall, Delhi Police headquarters.”

Last year On September 1, Sanjay Arora assumed the role of the DG-ITBP. Before that, he served the ITBP as its commandant from 1997 to 2002. In addition to his role as commandant, he also performed the duty of Special Director-General in the CRPF. From 1997 to 2000, Arora oversaw an ITBP battalion in Matli, Uttarakhand.
Sanjay Arora served from 2000 to 2002 as commandant (training) at the ITBP Academy in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand, where he made contributions to the field of instruction.
Sanjay Arora received his electrical and electronics engineering bachelor’s degree from Malviya National Institute of Technology in Jaipur. He worked for the Tamil Nadu Police in several positions after joining the IPS. As the superintendent of police (SP), he received the CM’s Gallantry Medal for Bravery and Heroic Action for his actions against forest brigand Veerappan.
After having received training from NSG, Arora was amongst those who founded the Special Security Group (SSG) in 1991 to protect the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, where the LTTE was active. Additionally, he held the position of superintendent of police in several Tamil Nadu districts.
From 2002 and 2004, he was Coimbatore’s police commissioner. Additionally, he has held the positions of Deputy Director of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption as well as Deputy Inspector General of Police, Villupuram range.
Arora also headed the departments of the Additional Commissioner (Crime & Headquarters) and Additional commissioner (Traffic) in Chennai Police. Later, he was promoted as Tamil Nadu Police’s ADGP (Operations) and ADGP (Administration).
He has prior experience As IG (Special Operations) BSF, IG Chhattisgarh Sector CRPF, and IG Operations CRPF. Before being chosen as the DG of the ITBP, he held the positions of ADG HQ & Ops CRPF and Special DG J&K Zone CRPF.
