In the most recent Scooby-Doo movie, Velma Dinkley is finally shown as a lesbian, ending years of rumours. This week saw the release of the digital version of Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo. The movie depicts Coco Diablo, a brand-new character who portrays the leader of a costume crime organisation, as having a crush on Velma’s character.
In honour of the occasion, Google has implemented a feature where, when a user searches for any Velma-related terms, pride flags and confetti display on the screen.
Online videos of Velma confessing her affections and falling in love with Diablo from the recently released movie are very popular.
Following years of fan speculation, several Scooby Doo franchise followers stated that it was about time the iconic character was openly depicted as a lesbian.
A different commenter said, “Velma being gay is absolutely big, we’re at a period in time when this significant character, full of decades’ worth of history and fans, gets to genuinely be a lesbian and that’s just another part of her canon now! We should occasionally recognise these victories.
Previous Scooby-Doo writers and producers claimed that while they tried to show Velma as a lesbian, they were unable to be open about it.
I tried! James Gunn, the author of the Scooby-Doo movies from 2002 and 2004, tweeted in 2020. In my original story, Velma was out and proudly gay in 2001.However, the studio continued diluting it down, making it ambiguous (in the version shot), then nothing (in the version released), and finally having a boyfriend (in the sequel).
“Obviously, I don’t represent every version of Velma Dinkley, but I am one of the main people that represents this one,” she says. Cervone Tony, who created the Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated series from 2010 to 2013, wrote in an Instagram post that same year. Ten years ago, we were as explicit as we could be about our aims. Most of our fans understood it. Those who did not take a closer look should do so. There is nothing new to report.
