The Kuvempunagar Police have detained a conman who pretended to be a doctor on matrimony websites, even some portals reserved only for doctors.
According to the preliminary inquiry, the suspect wed and defrauded around 15 ladies in Bengaluru and Mysore. Surprisingly, only one woman stepped forward to report the con artist to the police, and as a result, he was apprehended.
According to the police, Mahesh believed that if he married and tricked powerful women, they would not complain to the police. This increased his confidence because most women experienced his crimes in silence rather than raising a fuss.
K.B. Mahesh, 35, a resident of Banashankari in Bengaluru who used to post his profile on matrimonial websites like shadi.com or doctorsmatrimony.com, has been named as the culprit.
Mahesh, who had only finished the fifth grade, planned an elaborate strategy to take advantage of vulnerable people. He pretended to be a doctor to fool over 15 ladies into getting married to him and rob them of their assets. The crafty con artist’s deceiving run, though, is finally over.
He targeted unmarried ladies, divorcees, and widows who had respectable jobs and significant incomes as his meticulously chosen victims. Mahesh admitted to the Police that he had tricked more than 15 women into marriage and that he had been running similar scams since 2007. Unbelievably, some of these victims were parents, and Mahesh had rented a mansion in Mysore, where he took his victims to impress people.
Additionally, he admitted to the police that he had rented the property in Mysuru and had been housing three of his victims there.
How was he apprehended?
Software developer Hemalatha, 45, from Bengaluru, reported the cheating to the Police, which led to the discovery of the crime. Mahesh fled with 200 grams of gold worth Rs. 8 lacks and Rs. 15 lahks in cash soon after their wedding.
Mahesh represented himself as an ortho DNB expert in Mysuru and sent her profile request on shadi.com on August 22, 2022, expressing his desire to get married to her. He declared to Hemalatha that he lived in the SBM Layout neighbourhood of R.T. Nagar in Mysore.
Hemalatha was intrigued by his profile and replied. They later met in Marathahalli, Bengaluru, at a fruit juice stand, where they exchanged phone numbers.
Mahesh asked Hemalatha to visit Mysuru on December 22, 2022, and accompanied her to see the presiding god at Chamundi Hill. Later, he took her to his SBM Layout residence.
Hemalatha was then told about his intention to establish a clinic at Vijayanagar Fourth Stage. Hemalatha and her parents talked about the union before getting married on January 28, 2024, at the Dolphin Hotel in Visakhapatnam.
Loan of Rs. 70 lakh
Just one day after the wedding, they returned to Mysore, and a few days later, he requested that Hemalatha applies for a loan of Rs. 70 lahks to help finance the inauguration of his new clinic. Mahesh is said to have threatened Hemalatha when she refused.
Mahesh stole Rs. 15 lahks in cash and 200 grams of gold on February 5. While Hemalatha was residing at the home in R.T. Nagar, Divya, a Bengaluru resident, claimed that she had also been duped by Mahesh after getting married.
Hemalatha reported the incident to the Kuvempunagar Police without further delay, and on June 13 a case was opened under IPC Sections 420 (cheating and dishonesty), 406 (criminal breach of trust), and 506 (criminal intimidation).
Following Mahesh’s arrest, the police seized several stolen items, including a gold bracelet, two gold bangles, a necklace, and a gold ring, along with two cars, seven mobile phones, and Rs. 2 lahks in cash.
A Claim of Reputation
Mahesh used to assert that he was a well-known physician whose services were in demand both inside and outside of Karnataka. He would keep his female victims in houses in cities and towns, visit them once or twice a month, and frequently communicate with them on the phone.
