Woman allegedly reported to have been sexually assualted by a hospital attendent when she was in a semi-consious state after her surgery. Following the complaint by the woman patient, the police arrested the hospital staff on Monday.
Sexual Assault by the Hospital Staff
In the complaint the woman told that she was admitted for thyroid surgery to the government hospital. After the surgery, she was shifted to the ICU from the operation theatre. When she was not fully consious recovering from anaesthesia, she was sexually assaulted by Saseendran.
Kuzhiparambath Saseendran, a 55 year old works at Kozhikode government college hospital for the past six years. He is a grade 1 medical attendee at the intensive care unit of the hospital. He is a native of Vadakara suburb in Kozhikode.
Usually, female attendees will be attending the female patients. But at the time of the incident, there was a patient at the critical condition in the ICU. So the other attendee left to help the other patient.
The victim also said that she was aware of the physical assault but was not able to do anything at the semi conscious state. The woman then told the matter to her family members who were waiting outside the Intensive Care Unit. The family then lodged a complaint with the Government college police station on Saturday.
Charges were filed against the accused
After the complaint was filed, Saseendran absconded from Kozhikode. The hospital suspended him from service after the repoting of such incident. On Monday, the accused was arrested at Kozhikode.
He was booked under various section of IPC (Indian Penal Code) including 376 (Rape) and 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty).
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Sudharshan was heading the team investigating the case. The police have investigated at the hospital and collected necessary information of the accused. They are also investigating if such incidents have happened before.

Health Minister Venna George ordered the directory of medical education to take necessary action on the matter and also submit a report to avoid such incidents in the future and ensure safety of women on hospital grounds.
