Shraddha Murder Like Anupama!
Aftab has a strong obsession with murder mystery crime series or movies. During Investigation, Aftab told he got this murder idea from a web series called Dexter.
Aftab Amin’s murder of his girlfriend, Shraddha, in Delhi has several similarities with Dehradun’s Anupama Gulati murder case of 2010. The shraddha murder case has brought back memories of a similar nightmare that took place in Dehradun in 2010. A man called Rajesh killed his wife Anupama, chopped her body into several pieces, stored body parts in a refrigerator, and disposed off them at several places across the Uttarakhand capital.
Anupama Murder Case
Rajesh Gulati and Anupama Gulati had a love marriage in 1999. After marriage, they shifted to the US for 6 years and then came back to India in 2006. After returning they decide to settle in Dehradun’s Prakash Nagar. Anupama hailed from Delhi, while Rajesh was from Dehradun and worked as a software engineer.
The Murder
It was reported that they used to have a frequent fight, During one such fight Anupama had a Physical altercation with Rajesh. On October 17, 2010, Rajesh then strangled her using a pillow. And for hiding the murder Rajesh bought a big freezer and chopped her body and refrigerated it. For the next couple of days, Rajesh spread the body parts in the forests near Dehradun.
Police said Aftab’s internet search history shows he read about the 2010 Anupama Murder case. Aftab Amin killed Shraddha in May, but police only got involved last month as her father came looking for her. The parents have not been in touch with Shraddha as they were opposed to her inter-religion (Hindu-Muslim) relationship. And her father thought that his daughter was in Bangalore.
The similarity between both murders
Here is an excellent match: In Anupama’s case also the accused drew inspiration from fiction – especially from Hollywood movies. Aftab too derived the inspiration from crime series.
Thereafter, both killers bought refrigerators to store the chopped bodies. Also, Gulati alias Rajesh cut the body into more than 70 pieces and kept these in a large deep freezer for three months. When he would go to school to drop off his children, then he used to throw the cut bodies in the forest near the hill station. Similarly, Police said Aftab bought a 300 liters fridge after killing Shraddha, and in over 18 days threw the pieces in the jungle near Mehrauli.
Further, Aftab Poonawala tried the same trick, using his girlfriend’s Instagram account to chat with her friends. But her friends became suspicious and informed her father, who had not spoken to her since last year that she had been inactive for months.
The Instagram chats became key evidence for police in Delhi and Maharashtra(the couple’s home state) to crack the case almost a month after her father filed a ‘missing’ report.
