The case of the recently deceased Punjabi singer, Sidhu Moose Wala, continues as the investigation is requested to be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation. However, these pleas made by a BJP leader and the accused’s father were denied by the Supreme Court.
On Monday, 10th July 2022, the Supreme Court refused the appeal for the intervention of the Central Bureau of Investigation in the murder of the late musical artist Sidhu Moose Wala. The plea, placed by a BJP leader in Punjab, was denied by the Supreme Court and stated that the state i.e Punjab would handle the case.
Why were the pleas filed?
A plea was also filed by the father of the prime accused (Lawrence Bishnoi), who is looking for the safe keeping of his son. Presently, in the custody of the Punjab Police, Bishnoi was not safe as claimed by the father and requested the Supreme Court to transfer the case to Delhi for protection. Bishnoi’s father believed that there was a serious threat to his son’s life with the fear of unlawful killing or even a staged encounter by the Punjab state police.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Jagjit Singh’s plea stated that the case involved not only inter-state but international syndicates as well and believed that it would be advantageous for justice that the case be sent over to CBI.
The decision of the Supreme Court.
The bench of justices constituting Ajay Rastogi and Abhay S Oka said that all parties were equal to them and that in matters such as the case at hand there is no place for political parties. They further went on to state that the Punjab police are taking care of the matter and not politicizing the matter where it is not required. They denied the CBI probe.
The BJP leader requested the court to withdraw his plea, to which the court agreed. His lawyer said that he was instructed to withdraw the plea since Punjab Police is taking the matter further and said that he would have pressed further if they were not.
Sidhu Moose Wala, the Punjab singer turned Congress leader was shot dead on the 29th of May, 2022. The singer, along with 400 other people had their security cover withdrawn by the Aam Aadmi Party Punjab government on a temporary basis.
The accused’s father requests the court to ensure his son’s complete safety while in custody. However, according to Punjab Police, Bishnoi has already claimed accountability for orchestrating the killing.
