Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi will be acting as president over a scheduled meeting. The meeting will be with core party leaders such as Pradesh Congress Committees (PCCs).
AICC general secretaries, in-charges, and secretaries on Tuesday to discuss the upcoming Assembly elections of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Manipur, and Goa, among other issues. The meeting will be held at party headquarters, New Delhi.
Today’s Meeting
According to political sources, Sonia Gandhi, Congress president, will meet the party general secretaries and state in-charges at the AICC headquarters, New Delhi, to discuss membership, agitation program, training, and strategy for the upcoming Assembly elections.
Pradesh Congress Committee chiefs will also be present in the crucial meeting.
The meeting consisting of core leaders will also discuss the roadmap for its mass Jan Jagran campaign from November 14 to 29. According to an announcement made by the party, during this period in November, the party will hold “massive agitation” against the rise in fuel prices during the said period.
CWC Meeting
The Congress Working Committee (CWC) held a meeting on 16th October. In the meeting, the Congress Working Committee discussed organizational polls and the current political situation in which the party finds itself.
The meeting also talked about the presidency of the party, to which Sonia Gandhi said that she is a full-time and hands-on Congress president.
In CWC, they also discussed organizational polls to be held next year. For the polls to be successful, a membership drive will be launched from 1st November.
The Congress Working Committee approved a schedule of a period between August 21 and September 20. In this period, the election will hold to elect the new Congress President.
In this CWC meeting, CMs of Rajasthan, Punjab, and Chhattisgarh, Ashok Gehlot, Charanjit Singh Channi, and Bhupesh Baghel, respectively, along with some other leaders, had requested Rahul Gandhi to take charge of the party president post.
Other frontal organizations like Indian Youth Congress, NSUI, Mahila Congress, and the party’s Social Media department have passed a resolution to make Rahul Gandhi a party president.
On these resolutions, Randeep Surjewala, Congress Spokesperson, confirmed that Gandi would assure the requests.
Today’s Discussion
According to AICC functionaries, in today’s meeting, there will be discussions about the mobilization of national agitation against the Centre on inflation as discussed and announced by CWC.
The meeting will also discuss Congress Member drive launching on 1st November. They will also discuss finalizing the plan for the proposed training of the party workers.
Congress released prerequisites of memberships 2 days before this meeting.
According to the membership form released by Congress, any person wishing to join the party will have to make sure that they never consume alcohol and drugs or criticize the party and its programs in public forums.
Some of the undertakings to be signed before becoming a Congress Member include habitual wearer of Khadi, not believing in or practicing any social discrimination, believing in an integrated society, not owning any property excess of ceiling laws, etc.
According to Congress leaders, the meeting will act as a message to all the functionaries of the states belonging to the party.
They want this meeting as an occasion for a party that is the country’s main opposition party to activate itself after a long spell of insensible organizational actions.
Such actions were due to some significant factors such as lack of clarity on leadership, losing of strength election-wise, and limitations on political activities due to Covid.
According to Political sources, Sonia Gandhi has called Uttarakhand Congress leaders in the meeting to discuss upcoming Assembly elections. She will also discuss and review the disaster relief of the state.
As per sources, the meeting will discuss the entry of BJP leaders into Congress.
