- India’s Sonipat has become the most extensive production base for Maruti Suzuki.
- Sonipat’s production base receives Rs18,000 crore investment.
Maruti Suzuki earlier declared that Sonipat in Haryana is the new production base. It is likely to emerge as the largest one for the company. RC Bhargava, the chairman, said that the construction on the site would start soon. He added, “The unit’s first assembly line will be commissioned within three years.” According to the total estimates, the Sonipat facility may be approximately one million units.
Suzuki has three assembly lines in total. Also, it supplies vehicles from its parent Suzuki Motor Corporation plant in Gujarat. The other two facilities are in Gurugram and Manesar.
The Sonipat facility will receive an investment of Rs 18,000 crore, and it will replace the Gurugram plant, which is already facing many complaints from the nearby residential areas. However, the Gurugram unit was the first plant that the company started in 1983. It was the same unit that launched the iconic Maruti 800.
Impact of National Lockdown on Maruti Suzuki
The covid19 pandemic and its impact are heavy on almost all the sectors related to day-to-day life. Economic backlash is significant, and the business world is also facing substantial losses due to the upheaval created by the pandemic.
Overall, Maruti Suzuki sales, including domestic and export, declined 6.7% to 1,457,861 units due to the strict lockdown guidelines to curb the spread of Covid19. However, the demand in the domestic market recovered quickly after the second wave of Covid19. But the problem still lies with the supply of the semiconductors.
It has continued to affect production across automakers. According to the reports, Maruti Suzuki’s sales rose 20.5% to 1,163.823 units in the first nine months of the ongoing financial year. The company is looking forward to putting forward its best product this year which will amount to nearly half a dozen models.
