In Manipur, top sportspersons including Olympic medalist Mirabai Chanu and weightlifter Kunjarani Devi, former Indian women’s football team captain Oinam Ben Devi signed a memorandum which is submitted to union home minister Amit Shah in Imphal demanding revocation of suspension of operations with kuki extremist groups, citing attacks on Manipur’s integrity despite heavy security presence.
The sportsperson expressed concerns that the suspension of the operations agreement hindered parliamentary forces from effectively countering Kuki’s attacks on civilians. They urged the preservation of Manipur’s unity and the deportation of illegal migrants back to their countries.
The memorandum sent to the union minister emphasized that the athletes will return their awards if the government does not take prompt actions to restore peace in Manipur.
The Naga Organisation’s general secretary Ranjita Golmei appealed to Prime Minister Modi, urging them to expedite the process of bringing the state to normalcy and on the same highlighting the blockades of arterial national highways which have led to the scarcity and high prices of essential items.
STALIN’S RESPONSE
Noticing, on Sunday, Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin extended an invitation to Manipur’s sportspersons affected by the violence-torn state of the state, offering them training facilities in the southern state. His son and sports minister, Udhayanidhi, assured them that all the necessary support and amenities in high-quality would be provided to them.
Stalin viewing the current state of Manipur in deep concern and anguish stated that the prevailing conditions in Manipur were unfavourable for the training of sportspersons aiming to participate in events such as Khelo India and the Asian Games.
HEAVY CRITICISM TO STALIN AND MANIPUR STATE HANDLING
Stalin’s invitation received a strong reaction from BJP, and the state unit chief K Annamalai criticized the chief minister that after months of being inactive, he had suddenly become active and was behaving like a typical politician, and also asserted that the centre which took the initiative of Khelo India Games is capable to train athletes for the tournament.
Moreover, slamming the CM in the face with this invitation was called an act of Stalin promoting his son ‘udhayanidhi’ who holds the portfolio, and what was happening when human faeces were found in an overhead tank catering to Dalit residents in Putthukotai’s Vengaivasal, and that 200 days had been passed since the incident but no action had been in place to find the culprits.
In Manipur, the centre and the state together are tackling the issue. It has been mentioned that six individuals had been apprehended in connection with the viral video depicting the shameful act of two women parading naked.
The deities who predominantly reside in Imphal Valley made up about 53% of the population and other communities such as the nagas, and the kuki make up about 40% of the population and mostly inhabit the hill districts.
The ongoing concern since May 3rd, when a ‘tribal solidarity March’ was held in the districts of Manipur to protest the meitei community’s demand for scheduled tribes status, more than 160 people have lost their lives, and others have sustained injuries in the ethnic violence that ensued.
