Ben Stokes assigned as a next England Men’s Cricket Captain
England has appointed Ben Stokes as its new Test captain, following Joe Root’s resignation earlier this month.
Stokes claims,
“I am honoured to be given the opportunity to lead England in Test matches. This is an incredible honour for me, and I’m looking forward to getting started this summer.”
“I’d like to thank Joe (Root) for everything he’s done for English cricket, as well as for always being a tremendous ambassador for the game around the world; he’s been essential in my growth as a locker-room leader, and he’ll continue to be a valued ally in this position.”
After making his Test debut in December 2013, Stokes has 79 red-ball games for England. He was named vice-captain in February 2017, and he also served as captain while Root was abroad for the birth of his second child in the summer of 2020.
ECB Statement
After England Men’s Cricket Managing Director Rob Key supported Stokes’ nomination, the ECB Interim Chair and Chief Executive Officer Tom Harrison ratified it on Tuesday evening, making him the 81st captain of the England Men’s Test side.
Key stated, “I have no reservations about naming Ben as Test captain, as we move forward in red-ball cricket, he embodies the mindset and approach we want to take with this squad. I’m overjoyed that he agreed, and I know he’ll be up to the added responsibility and honor. He is well-deserving of this recognition “He went on to state the following.
Harrison stated,
“I am ecstatic that Ben has accepted to become England’s Men’s Test captain, he is deeply concerned and passionate about what it means to represent England, and he will confidently lead us into a new age. It’ll be a crucial summer for our Test team, and Ben and his teammates will no doubt embrace the task.”
Stokes takes command of an England team that has won just one of their last 17 Tests and has gone five series without a win for the first time in history. In the World Test Championship 2021-23, they are currently in last place.
