The relief from Covid-19 pandemic has not yet begun as cases triple and hospitalizations double in European nations. Omicron Variants sweep across the continent for the past six-weeks which has resulted in nearly half of infection worldwide.
A prolonged pandemic period is expected as the virus mutates into a super-infectious omicron variant. This has brought in a new wave across Europe and is positing a huge risk to the population. Assumptions claim that the rise in hospitalizations is likely to increase during the autumn and winter months. Furthermore, this could lead to a great challenge for the frontline workers with lasting pressure since 2020.
Nasty and Deadly Illness
Hans Kluge, WHO’s Europe director in the press meet urged people to be on the safer side by making their own decisions. He said that the authorities of many countries have underestimated the virus and thus abandoned the restrictions and safety measures.
By now, people all over the world are aware of the safety tools like sanitizing, using masks, maintaining distance, et cetera, to prevent the spread.
“Just because a mask isn’t mandated doesn’t mean it’s prohibited,” Kluge added.
Covid-19 Report across the Continent
Claiming the lives of about 3,000 people every week and infecting three million of the population last week, a new coronavirus has been reported in 53 countries of the European region, which stretches to Central Asia.
To monitor and control the spread of this “nasty and potentially deadly illness” implementation of adequate measures is being discussed.
The center urged the people in the age group 60 to 79 along with the at-risk population to get their second booster shot.
‘Nowhere near over’
The pandemic is “nowhere near over” as the new waves keep hitting all over the world and run freely, warned WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
“As the virus pushes at us, we must push back,” Tedros said.
Compared to the beginning of the pandemic, Tedros said that the position of the world has improved.
To Conclude
The spread has been enhanced due to factors like international travel, the experts said. Besides, a decrease in testing by many countries has increased the rate exponentially than the figures represent.
However, preventive measures must not be taken for granted. As the prediction of the virus’ evolution and mutating characteristics remain unsolved, the need to reduce the transmission is the need of the hour.
