The two-day IPL Auction was a chaotic ride from the Auctioneer collapsing to the multiple-bidding war; it was sheer madness in Bengaluru. At the same time, all teams chose their squad with a lot of clarity and showed what they wanted—this year, where young players were picked for higher bids. Suresh Raina Ishant Sharma star veterans didn’t get picked. It was heartbreaking that Indian stars who went unsold this year could end up on the other side of the road.
Suresh Raina
When franchisees spend millions on young players, Indian middle-order Batsman Suresh Raina, known as Mr. IPL, surprisingly found no buyers. Raina retired from International Cricket in 2020, had a base price of Rs 2 crore, and was ignored on the Auction Days. Everyone thought Raina would feature at the accelerated auction and be picked at his base price. This year is the first time Raina went unsold for IPL. Raina had previously played for Chennai Super Kings and has been at his best winning points for Chennai Super Kings, but unfortunately, Raina was also ignored by Chennai Super Kings. Raina is the fourth-highest run-getter in IPL with 5528 runs and will be missing the tournament for the second successive time. He pulled out of IPL 2021 in UAE due to personal reasons.
Ishant Sharma
For Indian pacer, Ishant Sharma going unsold this time can be the end of the road. Delhi Capitals bought him in 2019 for Rs 1.1 crore, but he did not live up to the team’s expectations. IPL 2022 Auction is not the first time the Indian pacer failed to get picked. In the 2018 IPL Auction, he was left unsold. After going unsold in 2018, he made a comeback with Delhi Capitals in 2019 and scalped 13 wickets. However, he only got one or three games in the next two seasons.
Amit Mishra
Amit Mishra is the oldest player in IPL 2022 Auction. A wrist spinner wicket ticket found no bidders in Bengaluru. Having a base price of Rs 2 crore, Mishra was not even considered for the accelerated auction. Mishra has been playing for Delhi Capitals since 2015, but he was replaced by Kuldeep Yadav and Praveen Dubey this year. Mishra has taken 166 wickets in 154 IPL matches. In 2021, he played four games and ended up taking six wickets. He also holds the record for having most hat-tricks in the IPL – three followed by Yuvraj Singh with two hat-tricks.
Cheteshwar Pujara:
Another shocking from the Chennai Super Kings came when Chennai Super Kings did not pick Cheteshwar Pujara. He was the one-time champion through Chennai super Kings last year Pujara didn’t find a bid despite keeping his base price at Rs 50 Lakhs. Pujara has played for Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Punjab Kings before joining CSK last year. Pujara has scored 390 runs in 30 IPL matches.
With the growing demand for youngsters, experienced players have been left out of the IPL this year. A total of 80 players went unsold on Day 2. A total of 203 players (137 Indians, 66 overseas) were sold in two days.
