12 days after Nancy Pelosi, a five-member delegation led by Sen. Ed Marky of Massachusetts arrived in Taiwan today. A local news channel shared the video of a US government plane landing at Songshan Airport in Taipei on Sunday.
The delegation met with President Tsai-Ing Wen & some other officials. The delegation came to talk about reducing tensions with China on borders. They supposedly also talked about the investments in semiconductors.
The members of the delegation were Republican Representative Aumua Amata Coleman Radewagen, a delegate from American Samoa, and Democratic House members John Garamendi and Alan Lowenthal from California and Don Beyer from Virginia.
The Nancy Pelosi visit & the aftermath
The congressional leader, Nancy Pelosi, came down to Taiwan on August 11, to talk about some similar interests.
This kind of activity or any official contact with foreign governments, specifically with a person of Nancy’s rank has been objected to by China for a very long time.
Nancy’s visit was answered by China, in the form of heavy & aggressive military drills across the borders of the island. It sent planes, missiles & warships to seas & skies in Taiwan for several days afterward.
Taiwan’s Defence Ministry has told the media that it is witnessing Chinese warplanes breaking through the midpoint of the Taiwan Strait for days. The ministry said that the intrusions did not stop, even after the completion of the military exercises last Wednesday.
The 10 fighter jets were among 22 Chinese military aircraft and six naval ships detected in the area around Taiwan by 5 p.m. on Sunday, tweeted the Defence Ministry of Taiwan.
Markey met with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol earlier Sunday in South Korea before arriving in Taiwan on a separate flight at Taoyuan International Airport, which also serves Taipei.
Words from the U.S Officials
A senior official from the White House, working on Asia policy, told the media that China has used Nancy’s meeting with Taiwan as a pretext to launch their pressurising campaign on the border regions of Taiwan.
Kurt Campbell, a deputy assistant to President Joe Biden was called by the reporters of AP. He told the reporters that China has overreacted on the matter. The official said that the reaction is “proactive, destabilising & unprecedented.”
“It has sought to disregard the centerline between the P.R.C. (People’s Republic of China) and Taiwan, which has been respected by both sides for more than 60 years as a stabilising feature,” he added.
China’s opinion on the matter
China has accused the U.S of providing weapons & technology to Taiwan in support of the island being free. The country says that the US has been doing this to break the diplomatic & peaceful coalition of the two countries.
It says that it is welcoming a peaceful joining of the self-governed island, but it will not rule out the option of force, depending on the situation.
Meanwhile, some days back Campbell said that it is sending warships to Taiwan & is about to announce a roadmap for the trade plans with the Island country.
Although the U.S has been long-standing that it is not in support of independent Taiwan but would want the matter to be solved peacefully.
Taiwan-China conflict
During the 1949 civil war the winning communists got hold of major China while the losing nationalists received Taiwan.
Since then China has been trying to resolve the differences between the two countries & make them agree to join peacefully.
Though many countries believe that it would do anything to get Taiwan back, & we could expect another Russia-Ukraine scenario here.
