Team India Qualifies For ICC WTC Finals
Team India led by Rohit Sharma recently locked up their place in the ICC World Test Championship after defeating Australia in the 4-matches Border-Gavaskar Test Series by 2-1.
Rohit and Co. needed a victory out of the BGT series, however, when they drew it with the Aussies their qualification became concrete when Srilanka- the only other contender for the final spot- lost their 1st Test against New Zealand in a last-ball thriller match. While India made it to the finals with a little help from New Zealand, Australia already qualified for the World Test Championship Finals when they defeated India in the 3rd Test by nine wickets at Indore.
India will battle against Australia in a rematch for the World Test Championship Finals at the iconic Kennington Oval Stadium, London starting from 7th June 2024. Postulations over the series have already begun on India’s potential squad and combinations for the match.
Sachin’s Warning For Rohit Sharma & Team India
During an event, legendary former Indian batter Sachin Tendulkar was asked about India’s chances of being on the victorious side in the World Test Championship Finals 2024. He yet remained very optimistic in his response, however, he fired a warning toward the Indian Captain Rohit Sharma and Team India management regarding the challenges that they might face while facing Australia under the English conditions.
The former Indian player highlighted the importance of having a totally balanced squad at the Oval considering not just the overhead conditions but also keeping the weather conditions in sight for the five-day match. Team India has played well previously and the balance can be seen in the squad.
Noting that the conditions of playing at the Kennington Oval Stadium will be different, Tendulkar sent a warning to the Team management and Captain Rohit Sharma, saying that it would be a tad bit challenging to fit 2 spinners in the playing 11 bowling unit and make a balanced team. However, he also said that Team India has a fair chance of winning the WTC Finals.
“It would be slightly challenging for a captain to have extra spinners in the team to get the balance right. We stand a very good chance,” he said at India Today Conclave.
India’s Second Chance at WTC Final, Against AUS
Interestingly, this is team India’s second shot at the World Test Championship, after facing a heartbreaking loss at the maiden edition of the ICC tournament when they faced New Zealand in 2021 when Kane Williamson chased down the target of 139 at Southampton. They would be hoping to get crowned as the champions this time and write history after winning the World Test Championship title.
Australia on the other hand will not be a feeble opponent as they do have a star-studded bowling line up which includes, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc in the English conditions. The World Test Championship Finals will take place from 7th June to 11th June 2024 at Kennington Oval Stadium, London.
