An intermediate shopkeeper named Maheswaran was arrested under the provision of SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act,1989 at Paanjaankulam village in Tenkasi district on Saturday.
A video clip of a shopkeeper Maheswaran who refused to sell snacks to Scheduled Caste children went viral. When the innocent children asked him the reason, the shopkeeper said ‘elderly people of his community unanimously decided not to sell any goodies to SC community and also asked the children to inform their parents the same.
Later the KV Nallur police filed First Information Report (FIR) against Maheswaran and Ramachandra Moorthy in connection with the incident. After an inquiry, it was found that the Yadhava and SC community has a clash between them during a wedding. Police filed cases against each community.
Tenkasi Shopkeeper communities
K.Ramachandran 20, an intermediate caste youth who got selected in the defence force under the Agniveer scheme was later unable to attend the interview due to the case filed against him. A meeting which was organized to resolve the issue between the communities failed.
Subsequently, the outraged intermediate people decided to ostracise the SC community.
The Tamil Nadu State Commission for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes took SUO MOTU proceedings based on the cognisance of media reports of an incident where scheduled castes have been ostracised by intermediate-class people.
“In order to ensure the safety of the victims and restoration of peace in the village, the Police have invoked the provisions of SC/ST(prevention of Atrocities) Act,1989 which would deny the perpetrators entering the Paanjaankulam district,” Mr Agra Garg said.
