On Wednesday, Australian tennis star Ashleigh Barty announced her retirement from tennis through a video posted in Instagram.Ā
The reigning world number 1 of Women’s tennis, Ashleigh Barty announced her retirement from the sport on Wednesday at the age of 25 only. She posted a tearful video message on Instagram announcing her retirement.Ā
The news comes as a shock to the many tennis enthusiasts and the whole tennis circuit. She is widely loved and admired for her game filled with accurate serves and excellent forehand play.Ā
Barty had won the Women’s Singles title in the Australian Open earlier this year in her home country. She created history as an Australian won a singles title for the first time in 44 years.Ā
Barty has been the world number 1 for more than two years now and has in her bag three grand slam titles- the French Open in 2019, Wimbledon in 2021 and Australian Open in 2022.Ā
In her video message, Ashleigh accompanied by her former doubles partner Casey Dellacqua said she was āthankful for everything this sport has given me.ā She added that she feels this is the āright timeā to put the racquets down and āchase other dreamsā.Ā
The Womenās Tennis Association(WTA) tweeted, āThank you for being an incredible ambassador for this sport and for women around the world… We will miss you so much.āĀ Ā
Previously in 2014, Barty had taken a break from tennis and played cricket in the first season of Womenās Big Bash League.Ā
