The city of joy has seen a surge in dengue cases in the past few days. According to statistics released by some officials of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation during the last few months, the number of dengue cases in Kolkata has increased by twofold in over a week. West Bengal has been experiencing an increase in dengue infections since July this year. This situation is recurring every year in Kolkata during the monsoons. This fatal disease is a mosquito-borne. It spreads with the arrival of the monsoon. But the danger seems to be mounting every coming year.
What is Dengue?
Dengue is a highly transmissible disease. It is a prevalent illness that occasionally takes the appearance of an epidemic. Dengue fever occurs in three distinct types:
1. Classic (simple) dengue fever
2. Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF).
3. The DSS (Dengue Shock Syndrome)

• Excruciating headache, joint and muscular pain.
• Pain behind the eyes, particularly when squeezing or moving the eyelids.
• Extreme fatigue, nausea, and loss of appetite.
• The alterations of oral taste sensations.
*Skin rash: A pinkish-red rash with widespread flushing emerges across the skin.
*Bleeding from the nose, gums, faeces, or vomit, as well as dark bluish-black, little or big patches of bleeding on the skin.
Extreme restlessness, cold and sweaty skin.

The 23 state districts have reported cases of viral fever, but the four highly affected regions are North 24 and South 24 Parganas, Nadia, and Kolkata. According to government authorities, North Parganas tops the list with more than 4,000 dengue infections.
Efforts by Goverment Bodies
The Kolkata Municipal Corporation are working tirelessly. They have visited various residents. They have also organised awareness campaigns and conducted free blood tests for government bodies. There are many factories and areas where the officers cannot enter. Drones are used with a spray to kill the mosquitos in these areas. These drones provide surveillance and also take photographs.
The Urban Primary Health Centre in Kolkata in Hatibagan provides free blood tests to people suffering from dengue malaria or mild fever. There are 17 other clinics apart from private hospitals that conduct these tests. Offices surrounded by accumulated, stagnated water are sent a notice. An inspection is conducted after seven days.
