Directed by Shakun Batra, Gehraiyaan is a romantic-drama film that premiered on 11 February 2022 on Amazon Prime Video.
As the film’s title suggests, the story was supposed to implore the depths but did it really justify its name, or did the title become too good to be true?
The Not-So-Sweet elements
The Gehraiyaan movie revolves around the lives of four main characters- Alisha (Deepika Padukone), Tia (Ananya Pandey), Zain (Siddhant Chaturvedi), and Karan (Dhairya Karwa).
Here, Alisha and Tia are cousins, Zain is the fiancé of Tia and Karan is the boyfriend of Alisha. As the film begins, we notice that Alisha has quite a dark history (shown later) and has a severe anxiety issue.
Tia lives in Los Angeles, United States of America, and comes with her fiancé due to his business project.
Alisha is going through an emotional and financial crunch where she feels overburdened and captivated all the time. When Alisha meets her cousin and her fiancé, we see a certain coldness between the sisters.
Along with the coldness, we could all feel the heat between Alisha and Zain sprawling even through our screens. As the story moves ahead, we notice how demeaning Zain felt when his to-be mother-in-law attributed his success to her daughter.
Amidst this whirlwind where Zain felt like a nobody and Alisha was hitting her rock bottom, they found their comfort with each other. They started creating their happy place, away from all the chaos of their life.
As they continued cheating on their respective partners, things started falling apart from them. As swiftly they created this life, the quicker it felt apart.
Did the Story Justify the “Gehraiyaan”?
The storyline seemed quite attractive since it tries exploring multiple angles of a relationship, but the noticeable point here is that it “tried.” The story explored present-day relationships.
Some people thought it glorified the ease with which people jump into something unfaithful and stir up bad blood in a happy relationship.
The other section comprehended the actuality it wanted to create about keeping the individual needs above someone else’s. It is pretty standard for our society to resort to compromises in a relationship, even if it means sacrificing one’s own happiness.
The film portrayed how the characters were trying to keep up with their individual needs even when it seemed selfish and greedy to the world.
The subject that is explored by the story often falls silent in the four walls. Hence, it is quite appealing to watch the dynamics of the subject selection in the industry undergo a positive transformation.
What irked me was that the film never traversed the sisters’ bond. The hidden “Gehraiyaan” of this bond was missing from the story. It is quite ironic since the story touched this relation only at the surface level when all it talks about the depths.
However, this story served us with the much-needed unspoken thoughts and impacted the unexplored area of our minds.Nevertheless, this movie was a “great try” at imploring the changing dynamics of relationships in today’s times.
Yet, there is a hope that such stories are brought to the public stage, which is repeatedly forced to shut themselves.
