Social media influencer ‘Revant Himatsingka’ aka Food Pharma takes to Twitter to share some disturbing facts on Brown bread and Multigrain Bread
In the current scenario where everyone is trying to get into shape and get healthier, food and dietary habits have evolved from what they used to be before. Low calorie foods are preferred over high calorie foods to keep the overall body fat low. This shift has led to the popular outburst in the consumption of bread, and in particular, the “healthier” brown bread.
But a recent video of a famous social media influencer who goes by the name of Food Pharma has made everyone question this healthier choice. Taking to Twitter, Revant Himatsingka has criticised the healthier options, the brown bread and the multigrain counterpart.
The Two Choices
He has exclaimed that the bread scene in India is a huge joke. He explains that there are two types of bread available in the markets in India: the one that is openly unhealthy (white bread) and another one that pretends to be healthy (multigrain, whole and wheat bread).
Increasing Consumption = Increased Risk
He shared his concern on the current trends of consumption of bread. A decade ago, consumption of bread wasn’t as prevalent as now. In the current scenario, bread fills the stomach of people for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Its versatile nature added with the minimal effort required to prepare a meal makes it a popular choice for mothers to feed their kids. He calculates that if we have 2 slices of bread a day, that’s more than 700 slices a year. This added consumption leads to an accumulation of the problem caused by the consumption of bread which aggravates the issue.
He further took to explaining that the white bread is made of maida or refined flour which has almost no nutritional value. Maida is prepared by polishing the wheat which removes the required fibres, thus serving absolutely no purpose on consumption.
He posted a video on Twitter showing how the brown bread isn’t healthy. According to Himatsingka, the brown colour is attributed to the caramel colour 150A. He also added that this colour is also used in Coco Cola and Bournvita.
Multigrain is just ‘ More than one Grain’
Speaking about multigrain bread, the third variety, the food influencer said that it too was made of wheat flour only. According to FSSAI, the ingredients are listed in order of weight and according to the label, the product is only 20% whole wheat and the rest is primarily maida.
He proclaimed that the companies add just a little bit of whole wheat and end up calling their product ‘whole wheat bread’ while in reality, it primarily still just maida. Revant further added that even multigrain bread varieties in India aren’t a good choice as the word ‘multigrain’ just means ‘more than one grain’.
Final Piece of Advise
As a final piece of advice, he urged the people to opt for wheat rotis instead of bread. The influencer also added that if we still want to continue consuming bread, one should check the label of the product to look at the ingredients used and advised that its wise to drop products that contain maida, palm oil and preservatives. Bread is better when bought off of local bakers rather than big MNCs.
