Following the demise of the late Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday, King Charles III proceeds to claim the throne, being its rightful heir. He was proclaimed as the new monarch on Saturday.
As per The Commons, the Royal Family stated, “A period of Royal Mourning will be observed from Friday until seven days after the Queen’s Funeral”. The death of the former queen seems to have shaken the UK to its core.
The date of the queen’s state funeral is expected to take place on Monday 19 September at Westminster Abbey in Central London, as per Sky News.
The End of an Era and the Beginning of Another
The people of UK have not yet recovered from the passing of their beloved queen. The late queen was celebrated the moment she stepped on the throne.
The King made a personal declaration on the death of the Queen at the historic Accession Council; “My Mother’s reign was unequaled in its duration, its dedication and its devotion. Even as we grieve, we give thanks for this most faithful life”.
He has paid homage to his mother’s life and her reign. And in his concluding statement, he promised to do his best to serve the country, and respect the crown and its people.
King Charles III proclaimed to The Accession Council
It will certainly be a difficult process to fill the shoes of such an impeccable leader. The newly proclaimed King says that he will dedicate “whatever remains of my life” to his new role as king while making his declaration to The Accession Council.
Along with him, Prime Minister Liz Truss and senior members of her government have taken oaths of loyalty to His Majesty King Charles. Interestingly, His Majesty is probably the first modern heir to the British throne. Rather than being tutored privately, he went to school and obtained his degree Bachelor of Arts from the University of Cambridge.
Moreover, he went on to serve in the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy, thereby participating in the deployment of several warships in the 70s.
Novelty to the Public
He is certainly no amateur to being closely watched by the whole world; first being a royal and second, his long and complicated love life which was celebrated and criticized by the globe. He has been subject to a lot of scrutiny and judgment during his divorce from Princess Diana, where he was pictured as the villain.
From there on, he worked tremendously to bring light to his tarnished name. Since that, he has been passionate about charity right from environmental conservation to community empowerment. He was even beloved by the former US president Barack Obama who addressed that he was preferred more than the American leaders after an eventful conversation with him.
The Tibetan spiritual leader, Dalai Lama congratulated him on the occasion of ascending the throne and assured saying that he trusts that he would become a great leader. Although his coronation has not been announced yet, it is said to take place at London’s Westminster Abbey, where coronations have taken place for the past 900 years.
Putin has also given him sincere regard for His Majesty’s claim to the throne. Prince William and his wife Kate, experience changes in their titles as well. They go from Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to Prince and Princess of Wales. His Majesty says that he is proud to pass on his previous title to his son, the Prince, and promises the people that he will serve as an exceptional leader.
But the prevailing question as of now is; do we still need a system of monarchy? Is it as efficient as before? We needed monarchy when people looked up to a single leader who was of impeccable wit and skill, so as to rule over an entire kingdom.
But in the age of modernity and democracy where each person has a voice and a choice, is it necessary to upkeep tradition? Well, we can only hope that the monarchy produces the noblest, kind, and most sensible leaders and provide service to the people and listen to their voices.
