3 individuals being accused were found guilty of aiding a conspiracy abduction of Governor Whitmer
Following months of conflicting outcomes in the primary case in federal court, three individuals accused of aiding a conspiracy to abduct Michigan’s governor were found guilty on any and all counts on Wednesday. This was a victory for government lawyers.
As members of the Wolverine Watchmen paramilitary organization, Joe Morrison, his father-in-law Pete Musico, and Paul Bellar were convicted that they had provided “material aid” for a terrorist act. Adam Fox, the main man behind the conspiracy, said he hoped to kidnap Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and other politicians in 2020 during firearms drills performed in rural Jackson Country.
In addition to sympathy for the “extravaganza,” a conflict that could have been started by an unexpected kidnapping, jurors also read and heard obscene, anti-government screeds. According to the prosecution, Whitmer’s COVID-19 restrictions had the desired effect of increasing Watchmen membership.
In his opening statement to the Jackson, Michigan jury, state assistant district attorney Bill Rollstin said, “The facts trickle out slowly, and you begin to understand — how — there must have been things that took place which folks realized there. You can understand how a bad tragedy was avoided, when considering how near Adam Fox was to the governor”.
Accused suspects to be detained
Musico and Morrison, who recently got tested for COVID-19, were visibly upset as they viewed the verdicts on video, outside the courthouse. While they wait for their December 15 sentence, Judge Thomas Wilson ruled that all three be detained. Governor Whitmer, who hasn’t participated in either state or federal prosecutions as a trial participant or spectator, said the judgments “are additional confirmation that violence and intimidation have no role in our politics.” “Those who pursue violent conspiracies to foment dissension will be held responsible under the law.” Democratic State Attorney Dana Nessel, who was running for re-election in a close race, applauded the result and lauded law enforcement.
Gun massacres and terrorist strikes are not unplanned occurrences. They are the end consequence of preparation for violent acts through preparation, strategizing, and resource gathering, Attorney Dana Nessel said. Defense lawyers contended that by the time the Whitmer conspiracy came to light in late summer 2020, Morrison, Musico, and Bellar had severed their relationships with Fox. They didn’t go to northern Ontario to scout the governor’s getaway property or participate in a crucial weekend practice session inside a “shot house,” in contrast to Fox and others.
