To commence her global outreach, Bangladesh Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, is expected to visit India in the month of September this year.
Speculations arise as the PM has been encountering criticisms from Western Nations for democracy deficit. And as a part, a series of diplomatic interactions will be held in the upcoming days.
An invitation letter for a “substantive summit” was being extended by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for a bilateral visit. The official letter from Narendra Modi was handed over to his counterpart in Bangladesh by K Doraiswami, Indian High Commissioner.
“The possible dates of the Prime Minister’s New Delhi visit could be within the first 10 days of September,”
as reported by Doraisawmi after a seventh-round meet of the India-Bangladesh Joint Consultative Commission (JCC)
International Engagement
To celebrate the half-century ties between India and Bangladesh along with the centenary of Sheikh Mujib, President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Bangladesh earlier. The reciprocal meet was arranged in the month of July. But was shifted due to some apparent reasons. Conceivably due to the comments of two BJP leaders on the Prophet of Islam.
The visit will be a part of an International engagement of greater significance, progressing with the next trip to the United Nations, and other capital cities. Ahead of the upcoming elections next year, the visits are to soothe the effects of “pulls and pressures” on the Awami League government.
Objectives
The visit will enhance the exchange of political dialogues on India’s relation with the Awami League, the growing risks against fundamentalism and exploring the ways to handle them by Sheikh Hasina. Along with encountering the pressure between her government and the West, and holding on to democratic principles and human rights.
The damages due to the recent floods in the eastern part of Bangladesh, and the fuel crisis due to the Ukraine war will also fall on the agenda.
Conclusion
During the JCC meeting which was co-chaired with Jaishanker and Dr.A.K. Abdul Momen, Dhaka raised crucial issues like border killings and water sharing. Momen added that the discussions concerning fugitive Bangladeshi businessman and NRB Global Bank Managing Director PK Halder were also conducted.
