Who was Syama Prasad Mookerjee?
In Jawaharlal Nehru’s cabinet, Syama Prasad Mookerjee served as the Minister for Industry and Supply. He was an Indian politician, lawyer, and professor who died on June 23, 1953. Mukherjee left Nehru’s ministry following a disagreement with him over the Liaquat-Nehru Pact. He established the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the forerunner of the Bharatiya Janata Party, in 1951 with assistance from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
Syama Prasad Mookerjee was a fierce opponent of Article 370, which gave Jammu and Kashmir a distinct status. He passed away while in custody in Kashmir in 1953 after being detained for visiting the area without the necessary authorization, a legal requirement the founder of the Jana Sangh later contested, according to sources by repealing the unique constitutional provision for the former state of J&K in 2019, the Modi administration carried on Mookerjee’s legacy.

Amit Shah, the union home minister, recalled Mookerjee and claimed that even his political adversaries respected him for his richness of information. “Mookerjee’s life was a remarkable synthesis of fresh notions of racial harmony, cultural commitment, education, and growth. Every Indian owes a debt of gratitude to him for making the ultimate sacrifice in the fight to save Bengal and maintain Kashmir as an essential part of India. Salutations on the day of his sacrifice, Shah tweeted.
The home minister continued, “His political rivals also took Dr. Mukherjee’s scholarship and depth of understanding into consideration. He was aware that the government’s views and actions at the time would not be sufficient to address the issues facing the nation. He made the difficult decision to forego the perks of power in the national interest because of this.
“According to Dr. Mukherjee, a country can only have a bright future on the solid foundation of its own culture and way of thinking. He presented the nation with an alternative political philosophy and a scientific approach to cultural nationalism for this reason. His same ideas are still driving the nation forward now in every sector “added Shah.
On the anniversary of his passing, BJP President JP Nadda presented flowers to Syama Prasad Mookerjee at the party’s headquarters.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also lavishly honored the founding president of the BJP’s predecessor Jana Sangh, referring to him as a “source of inspiration,” and wrote, “I pay my humble tributes to the founding president of Jana Sangh and our source of inspiration, Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his death anniversary. We shall always be inspired by his patriotic beliefs, as well as by the sacrifices he made for the country’s unity.
Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, also paid floral homage to Mookerjee in Lucknow and remarked that the politician had dedicated his entire life to promoting national integrity and unity. He added that the founder of the Jana Sangh spoke out against the Congress’ appeasement strategy and its propensity to “toy with the unity, integrity, and security of the country.”
