Twitter has emerged as a source of all the news which is trending in today’s time. Twitter is a microblogging site that has banned more than 57,000 accounts from India (to be precise it is 57,263 accounts that were banned from India). The account was promoting sexual exploitation, nonsensual activities, consensual nudity, and all sorts of allied content. All this was shared between July 26 and August 35. Previously, Twitter has faced a lot of controversy regarding child pornography, on the Indian platform.
Inappropriate and objectionable accounts on Twitter
There were more than 1000 complaints in a single month from its Indian users. On average 1088 complaints were received through the grievance redressal mechanism on Twitter. Looking at the number of complaints received, the website had to take some other action. The action was taken against 41 URLs across all the Indian websites on Twitter. According to Twitter, 76 grievances were such that they were appealing to the objectionable accounts to be shut down on an immediate basis, on a permanent basis. As and when the grievances were seen, the responses to the respective complainers were sent immediately.
After looking at the specific situation, Twitter kept a watch on the suspicious activities of all the accounts mentioned by the people/complainers. The truth was found out after reviewing the situation and the account carefully. Apart from all this, there were 15 requests related to the reporting period of the accounts. In the early days of September, Swati Maliwal, Delhi Commission for Women chairperson received many replies regarding so many accounts that were directly related to child pornography. There were also videos of child pornography and rape of women and children which were posted.
Accordingly, Suo Moto’s cognizance was taken from several accounts on Twitter. There were many brutal videos of children by women. All of them are very shameful to be described in words. The Delhi commissioner anyways received complaints, but Google also received approximately 37282 complaints from Indian users alone in the month of August 2022. There were new IT rules set in 2021. After the new rule of IT,5,51,659 inappropriate content was removed from the Indian side.
The complaints received were categorized under intellectual property rights, violation of local laws prohibition types, defamation-based content, etc.
