Twitter has filed a petition with the high court in Karnataka state withstanding several such orders. Twitter reacted to a letter from the government in June warning of “ serious result” of non-compliance with such orders. Where Twitter has more than 24 million users in India. Later after the petition was filed, Rajiv Chandrashekhar who is the federal minister tweeted that all the foreign Internet platforms had to abide by the Indian laws.
Sources who are familiar with the matter said Government has warned Twitter earlier in June stating that it was the company’s “last opportunity” to abide by the number of blocking orders. All these falls under India’s information technology law that allows the government to block any online misleading content that threatens the security of the state and also the order of the public among other things.
Twitter, a social media giant believes that the orders are significantly insufficient of the requirements of law and there are many of them who demonstrate excess use of power and are also not appropriate. In the case of the Indian Government, there are several cases where there are demands from blocking the entire accounts. And also there are several accounts that involve content that is posted by official handles of political parties.
