Super Typhoon Hinnamnor hit South Korea on Tuesday, making it the most intense storm in South Korea. The storm hit the southern region while dumping three feet of rain, destroying roads and power lines. The power outage left 20,000 homes without electricity.
South Korea halted 251 flights, ferries, and 354 trains adjusted as a precaution against the Super Typhoon. In addition, it made landfall near Geoje on early Tuesday. The Korea Meteorological Administration warned of potential casualties resulting from Typhoon Hinnamnor – the powerful storm to hit the country.
3,500 people evacuated alongside the southern coastline due to Typhoon Hinnamnor.
South Korea’s news agency reports that 3,500 people and 20,000 homes were evacuated along the southern coastline as it suffered power outages. The typhoon grazed the island of Jeju and made landfall near Busan. Then, it moved northeast toward the sea with winds up to 144 kilometres per hour. Heading forward, the storm will move closer to China.
South Korean officials put the nation on alert from flooding, landslides, and tidal waves resulting from Hinnamnor. In addition, the Safety Ministry said due to safety concerns officials were advising 14,000 people to evacuate. Approximately eight houses and buildings were flooded or destroyed. Officials inform the 66,341 homes suffered power outages, for which restoration work is underway.
Several highways and roads were closed, including several sections of the Olympic Highway that run through Seoul.
Warnings lifted in the country except in east coast regions.
As storm surges, the weather agency advises caution for expected high waves in coastal areas. The storm moved out of South Korea early morning after making landfall on the southern coast. It moved off the southeastern coastal city of Ulsan, 307 kilometres southwest of Seoul.Â
According to reports, Typhoon Hinnamnor’s intensity was similar to that of Maemi in 2003 – known as the most devastating storm. Further, the storm is expected to cover China and Japanese islands through the week.
Hinnamnor is regarded as a category 5 Super Typhoon and the strongest global storm of 2022
