Maharashtra Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackrey, has handed over the ministries of five absent cabinet ministers and three state ministers to other ministers so that the ministries can continue to run smoothly for the public interest.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackrey on Monday took a tough call and seized the portfolios of nine rebel ministers, who are currently holding in Guwahati, and handed the ministries over to other ministers. The decision was taken for the smooth running of the administration. The Shiv Sena currently has four cabinet ministers which include Chief Minister Uddhav Thackrey, Aditya Thackrey, Subhash Desai, and Anil Parab.
In the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government led by Shiv Sena, the Uddhav Thackrey led party had 10 cabinet ministers before the battle between the Thackrey camp and Shinde camp began. Now nine Maharashtra ministers including Eknath Shinde are holding in Guwahati. The nine ministers who were fired from the cabinet are- Eknath Shinde, Uday Samant, Dadaji Bhuse, Gulabrao Patil, Sandipan Bhumre, Shamburaje Desai, Abdul Sattar, Bachu Kadu, and Rajendra Yedravkar.
The portfolio of Eknath Shinde has been handed over to Subhash Desai while the portfolio of Gulbroa Patil went to Anil Parab. The agriculture department of Dadaji Bhuse was given to Sandipanrao Bhumre and Uday Samant’s education department was reassigned to Aditya Thackrey.
Meanwhile, Eknath Shinde has approached the Supreme Court arguing that the life of rebel MLAs was under threat. Shinde also moved to the court against Sena’s plea to disqualify him and 15 other rebel MLAs
What happened in the Supreme Court?
On Monday, the Supreme Court of India gave interim relief to the MLAs of the rebel group of Maharashtra, by extending the time to answer the disqualification notice given by the Deputy Speaker. The time period to answer the notice of the deputy speaker now extends to July 12.
The deadline, which was set to expire at 5.30 pm on Monday, was extended by almost fifteen days by the apex court. Justice Surya Kant and JB Pardiwala were hearing the case filed by the Shinde group, and the bench of two judges challenged the disqualification notice issued by Deputy Speaker to sixteen rebel MLAs. “ As an interim measure, the time granted by Deputy Speaker, to the petitioners or other similarly placed MLAs to submit their submission today by 5.30 pm, stays extended till July 12,” the Supreme Court ordered.
The court was hearing two cases filed by the rebel group. While one complaint was filed by Eknath Shinde, the other was filed by the remaining MLAs. The petitioners sought the following reliefs:
- Stay on the notice of the Deputy Speaker who sought to disqualify Shinde and fifteen MLAs
- Order the Deputy Speaker to not take any decision on the disqualification of fifteen MLAs, till the resolution to remove the deputy speaker is decided.
- Challenging the order given by the Deputy Speaker to recognize Chaudhari as Shiv Sena Legislature Party Leader.
- Directing the Centre and Maharashtra DGP to provide security to the families of rebel MLAs
It is to be noted that the workers of Shiv Sena, have been in an aggressive mood for the last few days. On Saturday, the workers of Shiv Sena vandalized the office of rebel MLA Tanaji Sawant, who is currently camping in Guwahati with the Eknath Shinde camp. The protesters raised slogans against him and wrote gaddaar on the walls of his office.
“ Our party workers vandalized Tanaji Sawant’s office. All traitors and rebel MLAs who have troubled our chief Uddhav Thackeray will face this type of action. Their office will also be attacked. No one will be spared,” said Sanjay More, head of Shiv Sena from Pune.
With the rising tension between Shiv Sena and its rebel faction, the Mumbai police imposed section 144 of CRPc, which doesn’t give permission to assemble five or more people, in the city. Police have also been deployed outside the homes and offices of different rebel leaders that are currently in Guwahati. These orders will remain in place till the 10th of July.
