S. Jaishankar: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said that India is faced with the challenge of ensuring that its economic interests are well protected and its consumers are protected by the steep rise in oil prices in the wake of the war. Jaishankar said that due to the Ukraine conflict, there has been a huge increase in international oil prices. Therefore, it is also an important challenge for India to save its citizens from the burden of rising oil prices. Jaishankar, who arrived here on the first leg of his visit to South American countries, made the remarks while addressing the Indian community here on Saturday.

He said India’s energy security concerns have increased significantly due to the Ukraine conflict. The Ukraine conflict has significantly affected India’s energy security. Defending India’s move to buy oil from Russia at cheaper prices, Jaishankar said, “We have a challenge. We have to ensure that our economic interests are well served through diplomacy, through dialogue with various governments, be properly protected and Indian consumers should be protected as much as possible from the ever-increasing oil prices.

The External Affairs Minister said that at present the world is in the era of globalisation and if something happens in one corner of the world then everyone else is affected by it. He said that the government is fully committed to ensure security and fulfilment of India’s national interest in energy in every possible way.
Significantly, after the start of Russia’s attack on Ukraine on 24 February 2022, America and European countries have imposed strict economic sanctions on Russia. India has increased oil imports from Russia after the Ukraine war and maintains trade links with Moscow, despite criticism from Western countries.
