According to the AFP news agency, the United Nations General Assembly suspended Russia from the Human Rights Council following a string of murders in Ukraine’s Bucha.
The evidence of civilian deaths in Bucha and other towns near Kyiv — which Ukraine has blamed on Russian troops, charges that Moscow denies — has outraged the world and prompted calls for fresh sanctions against Russia to be imposed on the Russian government.
93 members of the assembly voted in support of the suspension suggested by the United States; 24 members voted against it; and 58 members abstained, implying that international unity against Russia at the United Nations has been weakened as a result of the decision.
It was only the second time in history that a country has been expelled from the council. Libya was the first to do so, back in 2011.
Ukraine’s response to the suspension of Russia:
Ukraine expressed “gratefulness” for the decision to suspend Russia from the United Nations Human Rights Council, stating that the council should not include “war criminals.”
