Modhera Sun Temple
The sun temple at Modhera is situated in Modhera village of Mehsana district, Gujarat.
The temple lies on the banks of the Pushpavati river, built in the 11th century AD during the reign of Bhima I of the Chalukyan dynasty in honour of the sun god.
Modhera sun temple stands out as the major tourist destination in Northern Gujarat.
The temple is surrounded by terraformed gardens of flowering trees and birds.
The remains of the sun temple at Modhera are relics of times gone by when the worship of natural elements fire, air, earth, water and sky are at its peak sharing space with myriad manifestations of Vedic god.
The Sun temple is now maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, as it is a protected monument and no worship of god is offered for tourists.
The temple complex has three components, Gudhamandapa also called as shrine hall, Sabhamandapa known as the assembly hall and Kunda means reservoir.
The hall has detailed carved pillars and exteriors. To reach the bottom, the reservoir has steps and many small shrines.
