US lawmakers refuse to back the Iran Nuclear Deal, but lack the majority to block all the agreements with Tehran sought by Joe Biden.
The US senate has decided that they will not back another new Nuclear Deal between Iran and the World Powers. 49 of the total 50 republican members in the US senate, vote their disagreement regarding the attempts to revive the 2015 Nuclear Deal with Iran.
The current president Joe Biden’s administration is striving since last 11 months in Vienna to restore the Iranian Nuclear Deal ruptured by the Trump’s government. These negotiations halted recently when Russia invaded Ukraine. All the supreme leaders (P5+1) including US, UK, China, Russia, France (P5) and Germany (+1) were in talks with Tehran regarding the negotiations in the Iranian Nuclear Deal.
However, after Russia invaded Ukraine, the conditions are unfavourable for Tehran. In spite of continuous requests from Tehran, that Russian invasion must not affect the Vienna talks, the war is clearly affecting the Iranian Nuclear Deal. Amidst the sanctions imposed by the world leaders, Russia has halted the Vienna talks to an incessant duration.
US must decide on reviving the Nuclear Deal immediately: Iran
Amidst this ruckus, Iran is pressurizing the US to wrap up the deal to revive the 2015 negotiations, nuclear accord with world leaders. Tehran is under constant fear that the Vienna talks might collapse if the west continues imposing sanctions on Russia.
Last week, negotiations in Vienna were halted as Russia refused to participate. Russia demands the world leaders to guarantee that the sanctions imposed must not affect its trade relations with Iran.
Further, according to the reports, Iranian Foreign Minister is headed towards Moscow to discuss the international talks with his counterpart to revoke the 2015 Iranian Nuclear pact.
Prior to this, France, Germany, and Britain were constantly warning about the possible risk of the Iranian Nuclear Deal collapsing. Due to the massive sanctions imposed on Moscow, Russia demands to have its trade with Iran over the nuclear deal.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stated, “The ministers will pay special attention to the situation around the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian nuclear program in the context of the negotiating process in Vienna, which has entered the final stretch”.
On the other hand, the Iran’s Nour News described the visit of foreign minister to Moscow as, “a platform for serious, frank, and forward-looking talks between two countries, which have demonstrated that they can work very closely, decisively, and successfully on complex issues.”
Tensions between US and Iran
Situation between Washington and Tehran intensified when Iran launched ballistic missiles that landed on US consulate in Erbil, Northern Iraq. However, the Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) took full responsibility of the attack on the Kurdish capital of Iraq. The forces claimed that the missiles targeted the Israeli “strategic centre” in Iraq.
US Deputy Secretary said, “We are very concerned about what Iran is doing, but imagine these Iranians with a nuclear weapon. We need to get that off the table so we can address
their malign behaviour in the Middle East, and we will do all of the above, but first we’ve got to get this deal. And it is not yet closed”.
The Iranian Nuclear Agreement Act 2015, gives the congress in US the power to review the negotiations in the Iran Nuclear Deal. But, the senate don’t have the power to diffuse the deal.
On the other hand, Democrats that hold a small portion of seats in both the houses cannot go against Biden administration, especially on such a major issue of Iranian Nuclear Deal. However, the Democrats hold the opinion regarding US not engaging in an agreement with Iran as a permanent treaty.
Victoria Nuland, US under Secretary said that, “Russia was trying to ‘up the ante’ by tying the Iran negotiations to Moscow’s demands in Ukraine but the US was rejecting that. We are not playing ‘Let’s make a deal’.
