Republican Senator Tim Scott to join the bid for the 2024 presidential election with a campaign launch on May 22.
Tim Scott is a junior Republican senator. He has been serving in office since 2013. Governor Nikki Haley appointed Scott in 2013. Presently, Scott has announced his decision to join the bid for the 2024 presidential elections.
This decision came as a challenge to the reelection of former president Donald Trump from the party. Tim Scott is the only Black Republican senator in office. He has criticised President Biden and his administration’s policies on crime, inflation, etc.
Scott announced his campaign on Sunday at a city hall in South Carolina. He launched an exploratory presidential committee to raise funds. This helped him do so with fewer limitations than a formal campaign.Â
Scott currently maintains 2% support in the national polls. Trump and Ron DeSantis have significantly higher support in the polls. If Scott formally joins the bid, he will contest against Republicans such as former Governor Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy, Larry Elder, and Asa Hutchinson.
About Tim Scott‘s Campaign
Scott is the son of a single mother. He has often used his experience as an impoverished child to criticise the system. He faced several challenges in life until he got his first job at the age of 13. Before his career in politics, Scott worked in insurance and real estate.
According to Scott’s Twitter post, the fight for the election is personal to him. He will always defend the conservative values that make America exceptional. He has taken an upbeat approach in his campaign compared to his contenders, who make America out to be a declining nation.
Scott received the support of Republicans in 2020 after an unprecedented rise in police shootings of Black citizens. He was appointed to bring about a change in the legislation on police reform.
However, his reforms were unsuccessful and criticised. Scott’s other proposals proved to be successful. He was able to reduce prison sentences on drug-related charges. He was also able to create investment in low-income neighbourhoods by cutting taxes.Â
Brief overview of the Republican Party
The Republican Party, formerly known as the Grand Old Party (GOP) is one of the two contesting political parties in America. The Republican Party was established in the 19th Century to fight against the expansion of slavery to other states. It has been in opposition with the Democratic Party since then.
The Republican Party recognises the states right to protest against the federal government. The party is decentralised as compared to the Democratic Party. This allows a wider reach in communication and opinions. It also presents a united front.
The party’s official logo is based on a cartoon by Thomas Nast from the late 19th century. It is an elephant.Â
Top Contenders for the 2024 Presidential Elections
Joe Biden
Joe Biden, the current President of the United States of America, will be running for the election for a second time since his win four years ago. Biden is the oldest U.S. president in history and does not face challenges from Democratic contenders.
Donald Trump
Trump announced his election campaign last year in November. He has faced the heaviest backlash from the Republican Party over his support of defeated far-right candidates. He is the top contender for the Republicans.
Ron DeSantis
DeSantis is currently the Governor of Florida. Although he has yet to announce his election campaign, he is making all the moves a presidential candidate makes. He is the second runner-up for the Republicans after Trump. He has signed restrictive abortion bills and turned lax on gun control. DeSantis is currently in a legal battle with Walt Disney Co. over its theme park in Florida.Â
Nikki Haley
Haley is the former United Nations ambassador for the Trump administration. In her campaign, she has stressed her relative youth compared to Biden and Trump. She has also made use of her background as the child of Indian immigrants. She has made a name for herself amongst the Republicans. She has 3% support among all Republican contenders.
Tim Scott
Scott is the only Black Republican Senator. He has minimal support outside of his home state of South Carolina. He is optimistic about uniting the fragmented Republican Party with his approach. This has garnered him some support as compared to Biden and Trump. However, that cannot ensure his victory against the other candidates.Â
