Ten months before the 2022 World Cup, Argentina showed why Lionel Messi will be a strong contender.
The Argentine team made its way to the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar once again
The Albiceleste beat Italy 3-0 at Wembley Stadium, dominated by Messi and Angel Di Maria, with the scoreline reflecting an even more comprehensive victory than the scoreline suggests.
Due to a leaking defense and a punchless forward line, Giorgio Chiellini had little to look forward to in his farewell match. “Finalissima.” was a match between the two continental champions in which Argentina was simply the better team on display.
There were certainly pro-Argentina and pro-Messi fans in attendance at Wembley Stadium in London during the match.
Although the first half was more even than the second, Messi and Di Maria created chances after chances in the second half. It was only Italian goalkeeper Donnarumma who stopped the repeated chances. Messi lost the ball to Dybala after a run by Argentina forward, but the Spaniard managed to slot it home in the 94th minute. As a result, the score was 3-0.
Despite being crowned the best national team in Europe at Euro 2021, Italy failed to make the 2022 World Cup after getting knocked out in the playoffs for the second straight time. Giorgio Chiellini’s farewell match was of modest quality, as he was unceremoniously removed from the match after halftime, thanks to an inept defense and a forceless forward line.
When his country won the South American Championship (Copa America) in July 2021, Messi won his first trophy as a member of the men’s national team. The Finalissima triumph at Wembley included silverware, but they have continued to improve under Lionel Scaloni, extending their unbeaten run to 32 games and counting. Argentina last lost a match against Brazil in the Copa America final.
