WHO chief Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday that we would likely see a spike in COVID cases with the arrival of the cold season.
As winter approaches, people will spend more time indoors, and the probability of infection and hospitalization will increase, he added.
In the past week, deaths because of COVID have increased by 35%. 15,000 have lost their lives to COVID in a span of seven days.
Delhi is experiencing a steady surge in COVID cases
In India, Delhi has reported more than 2,000 cases per day for ten consecutive days. The COVID positivity rate has suddenly jumped to 19.20%, according to the data shared by the health department.
In the light of recent events, Delhi Lieutenant Governor (L-G) V K Saxena tweeted that COVID is far from being over and Indian citizens should take appropriate measures to stop the growth spurt.
“We are witnessing a rise in COVID19 infections, consistently high positivity, and cases of reinfection. It is essential that we realize that the pandemic is far from over. I appeal to all to strictly adhere to COVID-appropriate behaviour. We cannot afford to let our guards down,” L-G Saxena said.
According to the Health Ministry, India has recorded a 4.15% growth in COVID cases daily for the last couple of days. The government of India is providing vaccines free of cost to the states and union territories in the new phase of the nationwide vaccination drive.
How can we avoid the risk of COVID at this stage?
Experts around the world think the COVID risk can be everted by taking the correct preventive measures. People have stopped wearing masks in crowded places, and even though vaccines are readily available, people are reluctant to take them. The fact that people are pretending that COVID is not here is making them susceptible to recurring infections.
WHO chief Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said we might have forgotten COVID, but the virus has not forgotten us. “Get vaccinated if you are not, and if you need a booster, get one. Wear a mask when you can’t distance, and try to avoid crowds, especially indoor”, he asserted.
