Cop opens fire near a residential building in Kolkata, killing a woman passersby with the act. Later, the man shot himself.

A policeman openly fired several rounds of bullet near the building of Bangladesh High Commission in Kolkata. He was first seen with a big rifle in his hand moving around in the street of the Park Circus area. Soon people living and working in the nearby area heard several loud sounds. They initially thought it to be some noise of fire crackers but soon could differentiate the reality. Chodup Lepcha, the cop aimlessly fired several rounds at the public and finally he aimed a bullet at himself and died.
Reports and eye witnesses of the incident say two people were injured and two people got killed including the cop himself. A woman who was traveling in a rapido bike was killed by the bullet shots. She immediately fell to the ground after the bullets hit her and she died at once. Another bullet had hit the bike driver’s arm and another resident of Park Circus area Mohammad Sharfaraz also got hit in his hip.
People started running from spot saying “Goli Chal Rahi hai”, “Bhaggo Bhaggo”. People became extremely conscious and nervous about the situation and they started running from the spot and rescuing themselves. A young driver saw the whole incident and escaped to a nearby tea stall seeing the firing.
Immediate Action taken by the Cops.
Cops from the nearest police station of Park Circus came immediately for the rescue. They investigated the whole situation and confiscated the SLR rifle that was used by the cop in open firing. The dead bodies were also recovered from the spot and further was taken for post mortem and investigation. Several other cops remained in the crime ground for two and more hours to see the different objects that were hit by the bullet. They also investigated the whole matter after hearing from the locals and the eyewitnesses.
Identity of the cop and the woman Killed
The woman was a 28 year old lady who belonged to the Dasnagar area of Howrah West Bengal. According to the various interviews conducted by the local media channels, her family claims that their daughter was the sole breadwinner for the family. She had a younger brother and the lady was undergoing physiotherapy training and also serving patients at the same time. Her family claimed on that very evening her marriage date was to be fixed. The cop who did the open firing was Chodup Lepcha and he was also a 28 year old who joined the services last year in 2021. Lepcha was transferred from the fifth battalion of Kolkata and thereafter proceeded for leave.
Deputy High Commission Official Reactions on the incident
When the Kolkata Police visited the Bangladesh High Commission immediately after the shootout, they assured their full support. According to the officials of the Bangladesh High Commission they heard faint sounds of the firing. Most of the staff and officials were having their lunch and had stayed indoors during the break. Few minutes after the firing they realized that these were the sounds of the bullets. The officials said that they will be helping the Kolkata police force during the investigation.
