The 2022 World Wrestling Championships is the 17th edition of the World Wrestling Championships
The 2022 World Wrestling Championships is the 17th edition of the World Wrestling Championships of combined events and will be held between 10 and 18 September 2022 in Belgrade, Serbia.
The UWW Bureau approved the candidature of Belgrade, Serbia as the host of the 2024 Senior World Championships.
However, due to the restrictions on Russia from hosting World Championships in 2021-2022, Belgrade will replace the former city of Krasnoyarsk as the World Championships host for 2022. By 2024 the World Championships host will be reallocated to Russia.
Indian wrestling icon Vinesh Phogat became the first Indian to pick up two world championship medals on Wednesday as she bagged the bronze medal at the World Wrestling Championships 2022 in Belgrade.
Phogat beat Jonna Malmgrenof Sweden 8-0 in the playoff to pick up the bronze in the 53Kg category.
Her performance earned India its first medal in this year’s edition of the wrestling world Championships taking place in the Serbian capital of Belgrade.
She endured biting pain in her leg to complete her match victoriously before her coach lent her a shoulder and helped her walk away from the ring.
She made it to the medal round through repechage after she succumbed to a shocking first-round defeat on Tuesday.
The triple Commonwealth Games champion, Phogat, failed to put up a fight and was knocked down by Mongolia’s Khulan Batkhuyag 0-7 in a major upset.
Phogat looked a bit jaded and lost her balance in the final seconds to be pinned by the Asian silver medallist in the women’s freestyle 53kg.https://tdznkwjt9mxt6p1p8657.cleaver.live/vinesh-phogat-becomes-1st-indian-woman-to-win/
But, she picked herself up after the loss and made it to the bronze medal bout and battled through the pain to come out the victor against Malmgrenof.
This is Phogat’s second medal at the world championships after her bronze medal performance in Nur Sulthana in the year 2019.
Phogat clinched the gold medal in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in the women’s 53 Kg category. Her triumph in England made it her third gold medal at the CWG in three successive editions following her victorious outings at 2014 Glasgow and 2018 Gold Coast.
She spearheaded the fabulous 12 medal-winning show of India in the Birmingham edition of the friendly games.
She is also a double Asian Games medallist while also boasting a flurry of medals at the Asian Championships.
She belongs to the fabled Phogat dynasty which has made the nation proud with its contribution to Indian sport and wrestling.
only 18, Antim is seen as one of the most promising Indian wrestlers in recent years. A couple of months before her gold at the Junior World Championships, she’d won her first senior international title at the Tunisia Ranking series, beating the 2022 Pan American champion Dominique Parrish of the USA, and the 2022 Pan American champion in the 55kg category, Karla Godinez, in the final.
Antrim had also nearly defeated Vinesh. She had a 3-0 lead inside the last minute before eventually losing 3-3 (on criteria) at the selection trials to pick the Indian team for the Commonwealth Games.
It was understood that the rematch was going to be a tricky affair but there was no avoiding it.
Six Indians — Ravi Dahiya (men’s 57kg), Bajrang Punia (men’s 65kg), Naveen (men’s 74kg), Deepak Punia (men’s 86kg), Vinesh Phogat (women’s 53kg) and Sakshi Malik (women’s 62kg) – had won gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Ravi, Bajrang and Deepak were named to the Indian squad for the World Championships without having to compete in the selection trials. Sakshi ultimately withdrew from the trials.https://currentaffairs.adda247.com/vinesh-phogat-wins-bronze-in-world-wrestling-championships/
Vinesh says she too had hoped for an exemption from the trials but was not granted one. “I had requested the federation if I could avoid the trials since it would have been very hard to cut weight for Commonwealth Games and then for the trials and then once again for the Worlds. That’s always been very hard for me,” she says. With no option but to compete, Vinesh prepared hard. “I cut down on felicitations after the CWG so I could be well prepared for this bout,” she says.
National team coaches knew how important the bout was for Vinesh. “She was of course very serious after their close bout at the CWG trials. Honestly, it was about for the CWG gold. If either Vinesh or Antim had won, they would have gone on to win gold at the CWG. But Vinesh was very determined to make a point in that bout,” says Jitender Singh, coach of the national women’s team.
Vinesh, the coach says, had been uncharacteristically cautious the first time she wrestled Antrim. “At that time Vinesh wasn’t thinking about Antrim. She’d never wrestled against her or seen her bouts. She was focused on a possible match with Anju (who had narrowly lost to Vinesh in the Istanbul Ranking series). Vinesh thought that the CWG trial would be between her and Anju. So, she was completely unprepared for Antrim and was taken by surprise.
