YouTube today announced it will certify channels of licensed medical professionals such as doctors, nurses and therapists who create health-related content.
The company introduced labels last year to indicate that information on channels comes from certified medical professionals.
Additionally, videos from these approved channels were featured in a new carousel called “From Health Sources” that appears at the top of search results. These capabilities were initially available to select institutions such as educational institutions, health departments, hospitals, and government agencies, but now the company is expanding its program to include U.S.-based medical professionals.
We invite you to apply for the program.
YouTube follows guidelines from the Council of Medical Professional Societies, the National Academy of Medicine, and the World Health Organization to provide a framework for authoritative sources of health-related content on its platform.
All and creators of health topics must follow there rules when creating video on YouTube
The streaming platform sets a number of requirements for creators applying for this certification.
- Your channel should contain primarily health-related content.
- You must have watched at least 2,000 hours of public video in the last 12 months.
- You must also prove that you are a licensed doctor, nurse, or mental health professional.
- YouTube will review the channel against its policies and verify with authorities that the applicant has a valid medical license.
Once approved, your channel will receive a special label for being a “licensed medical professional” and your videos will also appear on the health content shelf above relevant search results. YouTube says this covers most search results, but excludes rare diseases (which were not specified). A caveat is if the creator has created a video that is not directly related to healthcare, or if the creator has used keywords related to related illnesses.
The company also reviews these channels annually to help improve YouTube’s health content rules, and remove it from the program if necessary.
In addition to the US, YouTube will also begin the application process for medical facilities and individuals in Germany. Users in the region will see the health certification label and his carousel of health content early next year once the first channel is approved.
YouTube officials take over certification and health channel
Dr. Garth Graham, Global Head of YouTube Health, says creators are responsible for creating health-related videos. However, the company doesn’t offer a switch if you want to unmark irrelevant videos. and their families’ personal stories in a separate section. However, health creator personal stories may appear in the Health Resources section instead of the Personal Stories section.
There is also concern that accredited health-related channels are disseminating misinformation. Dr. Graham claimed that the company uses a combination of process (Al) and people (reviewers) to measure against YouTube’s policies.
“If a channel with these features receives a Community Guidelines strike or has content removed for violating our policies, the channel will be disqualified. You can reapply within 90 days of being resolved, which is similar to how the YouTube Partner Program works that many creators are familiar with.
