The Nation is in shock after the Shraddha Walker murder case came to light. This was when a friend notified Shraddha’s father, Vikas Madan Walker, that he had not heard from her for at least two months. Aaftab was also using Shraddha’s social media accounts for several months after he killed her to give the impression that she was alive.
Aaftab Poonawala was accused of allegedly strangling his live-in partner Shraddha Walker (27), and chopping her body into 35 pieces. He then kept the chopped body parts in a 300-litre fridge at his residence in Mehrauli in south Delhi for at least three weeks.
This horrific incident took place in May last year. He successfully dumped the body parts across the city over several weeks so that they go untraceable.
Aftab Poonawala was arrested in November last year. Later in the confession, told police that the couple had been at odds since moving to Delhi and he killed her after an argument.
Delhi Police have also recovered several knives, a saw, and many other tools from the Aftab’s Mehrauli flat where Shraddha Walker was killed last year.
Police also found an FIR allegedly filed by Shraddha Walker in 2020. In the letter addressed to Tulinj Police Station in Palghar, Maharastra, she wrote that Aftab was violent towards her and would often threaten to kill her. She also mentioned that she was not able to file a complaint because she was afraid and “didn’t have the guts to do it”.
The breakthrough of the case came out in December 2022 when during the investigation, police collected the blood samples from Poonawala’s Mehrauli flat and sent those for forensic examination. The Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) reported that the blood samples acquired from Aftab Poonawala’s house belonged to Shradhha Walker.
Later the 13 bone pieces were recovered by the police from the Mehrauli forest and its nearby areas, like Chattarpur, while searching for Walker’s body parts. The DNA tests were conducted, and the reports confirmed that the bones belonged to Shraddha Walker.
Both of these main pieces of evidence are going to form a part of the charge sheet.
Apart from these, the confession, both physical and audio, of Aftab Poonawala and the report of the polygraph narco test are also included, even though both these reports may not be of much importance in court. From a prosecution perspective, Aftab Poonawala’s confession to the police would not have been enough for a declaration of guilt.
On 22 December 2022, Aftab Poonawala dislodged his bail plea before a Delhi court. On December 17, Aaftab stated that he signed the ‘vakalatnama’ but was not aware of filing a bail application.
Additional Sessions Judge Vrinda Kumari said that the court received a statement from Aftab Poonawala that stated that the bail application was moved involuntarily. Aftab even denied allowing his advocate Mr. Khan to file for bail.
Aftab Poonawala is currently under custody in Tihar Jail, New Delhi and Shraddha’s father is constantly demanding the death penalty for this heinous crime.
