British politician of Indian lineage, Rishi Sunak, has been appointed as the newest Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Sunak will be the first person of colour to be appointed as Prime Minister of the UK. He is also one of the youngests of the Prime Ministers ever elected in the British parliament.
Rishi Sunak, an MP of the British Parliament, is set to take on the role and responsibility of the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Sunak, a British-born of Indian descent, will be the first-ever person of colour elected as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Rishi Sunak will be picking up the mantle from former or outgoing Prime Minister, Liz Truss.
On Monday evening, Rishi Sunak was selected to lead the Conservative Party and he will take the baton as Prime Minister after the conference with King Charles III.
After this crucial formality and practice, the MP will then be invited by King Charles III to formulate the government which will now rest under Sunak’s supervision. He will address the nation as the Prime Minister at around 4 pm IST.
Rishi Sunak’s acquisition of the position of Prime Minister happened as a result of him bagging the win against former Prime Minister, Boris Johnson and Penny Mordaunt, the leader of the House of Commons, who both withdrew in the contest for the Conservative Leadership Party.
This win for Rishi Sunak has historic prominence because Sunak happens to be the first Prime Minister of colour in the United Kingdom. His origins and ancestry traces back to India and Africa.
His parents were Indians who relocated from East Africa to London in the 1960s. However, Sunak was born and brought up in Southampton, Hampshire, in England. This sort of diversification has not been seen in the British parliament before until today.
Born on 12 May 1980, Sunak is also the youngest Prime Minister in the history of the United Kingdom, having only him and David Cameron, who was only a year older, i.e.53, to Sunak, to be appointed Prime Minister.
In terms of denomination, Rishi Sunak practises the religion of Hinduism and this makes him the first person belonging to a non-Christian denomination to hold the position of Prime Minister in the United Kingdom.
According to some reports, Rishi Sunak has an incredible amount of wealth and fortune. Apparently, it is believed that his riches surpasses that of all the previous Prime Ministers that have served the United Kingdom.
It is also believed that Sunak’s wealth is even more affluent than the prosperity and wealth in comparison to the Royal family.
Sunak is married to Akshata Murty, who is the daughter of NR Narayana Murty, the instigator of Infosys. NR Narayana Murty congratulated his son-in-law for his big achievement and wished him further success.
Murthy commented that he was optimistic of Sunak’s performance as the new Prime Minister and stated that he is confident Sunak will perform his duties according to what is required of him.
Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi also applauded and sent his congratulations to Sunak.
Taking to his twitter account, Modi said that he anticipates the opportunity to work with Sunak in the near future to transfigure the relationship of India and the UK into a contemporary affiliation.
HSBC CEO, Noel Quin said that with Rishi Sunak as the new Prime Minister of the UK, expectations have increased and Sunak must pursue to place the UK among the top economies of the world so that the country may remain globally relevant.
The UK has been undergoing a lot of turbulence lately but with Sunak as Prime Minister, it is estimated that there could be stabilisation in the markets as long as Sunak and his team emphasise on retaining London as a global financial centre.
He further added that the newly appointed Prime Minister must cooperate hand in hand with the financial industry in order to guarantee Britain’s administrative conditions endure and prevail its relevance in global competition but without atoning its honour and stature for shrewdness.
Moreover, Quinn said to Reuters that he had some pointers about the areas where there is potential for improvement in order to amplify competition even further.
Quinn spoke about the importance of competitiveness for the capital city of London with a “regulatory environment” with the rest of the world.
