This is the first face-to-face meeting between the two leaders since Russia invaded Ukraine.
After the pandemic, China’s President, Xi Jinping is about to step out for an international tour from 14th September, Wednesday, for three days. Jinping is going to visit Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.Â
The trip is to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Samarkand to discuss the country’s strategic goals with Russian president Putin and other prominent leaders of the Central Asian security group. According to reports, the Chinese president is also to promote the ‘Global Security Initiative’, first announced in April which seeks retaliation against the formation of QUAD consisting of India, the US, Australia, and Japan.
Xi Jinping policy
The summit is to take place on 15th September and is expected to be attended by other countries like India, Pakistan, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan while Iran and Afghanistan are observers. This is the first physical summit to take place since 2019 and there are some bilateral meetings to look after, mainly between Chinese President Xi Jinping, Russian President Putin, and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who are all expected to attend.Â
The last time the president was on an international tour was in January 2020, to Myanmar, before the beginning of the pandemic. After the trip, Jinping has only been to Hong Kong on July 1st this year to speak at a ceremony organized to celebrate the liberation of Hong Kong from the British, as Association Press reported.
About the SCO summit
This year’s Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is to be held in Samarkand since Uzbekistan took over the chairmanship from Tajikistan last year in September 2021. The President of the country, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, highlighted the priorities and tasks of the chairmanship which is to put in efforts to increase the potential and the authority of the organization to ensure stability and peace in the region and reduce poverty followed by ensuring food security Xi Jinping among the population.
Furthermore, Mirziyoyev has requested to put together a plan for developing intraregional trade including measures to eliminate trade barriers, and introduce and align technical rules and regulations, as reported by Russian news agency TASS.
