“You will never “find” time for anything if you want time, you must make it” ~ Charles Brixton
The time that we anticipate, we could have invested in a better and more flexible way instead of getting consumed by the screens, which helps us to have contact with a whole new world outside. Social media, which was introduced to socialize and make more connections throughout the world has now become a home and lifestyle of some people.
Youngsters are more likely to get consumed by screens, and most of them make a productive living too but the problem comes when one’s goals start getting affected because of too much consumption of media. All over the world, screen users most likely face the same issue. Approximately 70% of screen users face “digital eye strain”.
Exploring the consequences of too much indulgence with a screen can be sleep deprivation, obesity, fatigue, the strain on the eyes, loss of cognitive ability, lack of socializing, anxiety, and low self-confidence, especially amongst the young generation these side effects are most likely very easily visible.
The primary step is to get aware of the fact that putting a boundary or a limitation to our usual screen times is something which is important for our own well-being and for the future ahead, as the body also knows its own limits but we end up harming our own body resources only. Inculcation of a few changes or boundaries can help one to manage screen time.
Following are 8 strategies to reduce Screen Time
First, Make sure that you keep track of your screen time. This helps an individual to be conscious if slightly crossing the boundary.
Second, If you are working on the screen don’t forget to take breaks. It is important to let the eyes relax for a few minutes after too much exposure to the screen.
Third, Increase physical activities. The more physically active the less time you would have to invest in front of the screen, going out for a walk can sometimes help.
Fourth, cut down the use of screens in the morning and try journaling. Journaling about day planning in the morning will get us aware of our usual habits.
Fifth, Start reading more books. Once having a book on our ‘To be read’ pile we would get curious to read it.
Sixth, Choose socializing in person. When socializing we make a connection in person, which screens used to lack this special part.
Seventh, Remove unnecessary applications on the phone. This will prevent us from wandering around from one app to another.
Eighth, Spend time with yourself rather than checking out people’s lifestyles on social media. What people show on social media is somehow very edited, spending some time helps one to explore themselves in a better way.
