India where marriage is the most awaited ceremony in the life of a man and a woman as conditioned by our society. Marriage comprises certain rules and rituals which are practiced by the opposite sex and also certain vows that expel the ideal role played by a husband and a wife and how they have to live together.
Marriage now has become a material requirement where dowry and gifts are exchanged where the most important thing is money and status and not the compatibility of both the partners.
A Hindu marriage is not finalised by the couples but by their parents, the parents of the bride and groom through their children’s birth chart (Janam kundli) even if the families didn’t know each other or the bride and groom never met before this. In a small one-hour meeting they are expected to make a total stranger their lifeline.
Marriage is a full-time commitment when doing it with a person of one’s own will, it is important to know the person properly, that’s why marriages last longer. A host of studies have found that a longer romance before marriage is linked to higher marital satisfaction (source: thecut.com). Another study In, the 2006 Doctoral thesis shows, psychologist Scott Randall Hansen found that the highest risk of divorce record belonged to couples who had gotten married in less than six months after a few months of dating. What can we say about the Hindu marriages in which the woman has the least freedom to choose her own groom? These crucial decisions of life are also taken up by the parents and after a mere few hours of socializing the date of marriage too is finalized. Without knowing the history or the present of the family a girl is pushed by society tagging them forever.
Both men and women, with literally no information about how they are as individuals and their past have been having to try to form a relationship and just one thing is common to both of their marriages.
Wife astonished
Such a case was reflected in Gujrat’s Vadodara, Where a woman got to know that her husband is a woman after 8 years of marriage. 40 years old woman was awestruck to know that her husband has undergone surgeries for a sex change that would turn the husband into a man.
This case of Indian marriage includes blind marriages or the marriage at first sight system. The couple first met through a matrimonial site, nine years ago. The woman claims that it was her second marriage and from the first marriage she already had a 14-years old daughter.
The husband’s name who was a woman was vijaita and later after the sex transformation, the name also changed to Viraj Vardhan was a doctor and lived in Delhi with the family.
Viraj on the other hand claims that his wife already knew that her husband was a female by birth and was identified as transgender before the marriage, he also claimed that her wife was aware of the other surgeries that were about to happen. The fact that he was ascribed to the sex of a female was something he discussed already with his wife prior to the marriage.
Some of Viraj’s words explaining the whole situation gave the situation a different turn “I officially adopted her daughter. She even broke the engagement demanding the house before marriage and after nine years she claims that she doesn’t even know her husband’s body”.
A complaint was also filed against Viraj by his wife that Viraj was forcing her wife to perform unnatural sex and he was doing it all on purpose.
This whole case has its own secrets where one would be the victim and the other accused. Crimes in marriage take place almost every day but this twisted case was registered for the first time. Marriage shouldn’t just include a one-day event but also should include the knowledge about one another and trust.
