Being a little extra harms no one, and when God blesses you with an extra chromosome no harm can come to anyone. As there are no roses without thorns, there are no differently blessed individuals without haters. But being different is not a crime, and should be accepted as it is.
The world full of different people
As we live on this earth we come across many different people be it based on age, colour, caste, race, religion, gender, sexuality, and anatomy. So it is no surprise to find a difference in biological aspects as well.
Being adept in accepting the differences amongst each other is what validates the smoothness of any community, and furthermore of society. While a lot of people remain neutral in such circumstances, many stand against it.
Exclusivity is not the right kind of humanity and shall not be pursued in any form.
The dilemma of differently blessed individuals and their caregivers are neglected to the level of arrogance from people not so blessed.
To acknowledge any differences in the world, there are people who work hard, and enforce such enlightenment. We should accept everyone as part of the world that belongs to us.
Differences are meant to be understood, and accepted, but are rather practiced, and put into action against the greater good.
Behold the extra chromosome
The world consists of variety of individuals who are categorized for the ease of everyone. But the category does not come with the guideline in favor of discrimination.
When we observe the world chromosomally we find that there are certain people who carry a different makeup. And that is one extra chromosome.
Scientifically carrying an extra chromosome along 23 naturally occurring pairs of chromosome, defines one as a person with Down Syndrome.
This condition occurs when chromosome 21 fails to divide equally during gestational development, and produces an extra chromosome 21. Another term for such condition is Trisomy 21.
This kind of natural condition unindicted by the mother or the carrier of the foetus is frowned, and approached negatively.
Everything that occurs naturally becomes a source of resistance for people till they understand the absence of threat. Down syndrome is one of those conditions where people pity instead of comprehending the gravity of acceptance, and inclusivity.
Crime and accusations no one can accept
With changing times there have been multiple reports of people who have filed cases against people with Down syndrome, claiming the criminality charges. But the condition they suffer inhibits them from performing heinous actions against humanity.
A recent case from Ottawa, capital of Canada has brought insincere allegations against a child of 16 years old. The accusation is of sexual assault by a boy with intelligence of five years old.
Despite knowing the condition a child suffers, and making his way through the mental development that lags his physical growth the accuser went ahead and filed a police complaint which led to the parents’ home schooling him for rest of the year.
Another recent incident is from a well-known food outlet Wendy’s. The employ worked for 20 years and was then fired on the pretext of being unable to perform extra tasks.
Both of these cases provide ample evidence into lack of understanding, and supportiveness from people around them. The school management claimed to have new staff, and so did Wendy’s which gave ground to negative actions.
Working towards the inclusivity
Back in 1980s a time when inclusivity was not a trend but an accepted criteria for progress, October was declared as World Down Syndrome Awareness month.
Since then it has celebrated people with this condition, their suffering, and achievements alike. A source of inclusivity, awareness has proven miraculous for such blessed individuals.
The most famous achievement of our times is the show Ralph and Katie which is the spin-off of a drama series The A World, shows inclusivity in the most easily accessible way.
Characteristics of this condition makes facial features of a smiling person with droopy eyes which throws people off balance when they encounter them. The intelligence level varies, and can easily range from five years to pre-teen.
Including them with a welcoming heart, providing them assistance when, and where they need, and allowing them the space in the world they deserve are some of the ground breaking steps towards them.
Their abilities our help
The ability to be compassionate and passionate towards everything in life is what actually defines them and that is a blessing in disguise.
To be different, and being gentle with the environment that treats it differently is an act of natural kindness. From them we have our lessons we need to implant in our lives to supplant goodness in the world for them.
There is nothing wrong in being different. Differences are the reason the world thrives, and shall do so in future.
The ability to be different in a world of chaos, and negative attitude needs our help to eradicate such negativity, and push forth for a healthy and better tomorrow. Â Â
