Women emerged as a game changer in the quest for Independence. The History of Indian Freedom Fighters would be incomplete without mentioning the names of the women freedom fighters.
Women being the Game Changer
Women fought without any fear and the sacrifices, they made for the motherland are worth remembering. They fought with courage and true spirit.
When most of the male freedom fighters were in jail and they were helpless, then at that time, these women came forward to take the charge of further freedom.
Women played a very major role in the First War of Independence in 1847. Their work was credible. Their struggle for India’s Independence proved to be a game changer for this country, Rani Lakshmi Bai, inspired a lot of women to come forward and fight for their motherland. She inspired a lot of people. The first war of Independence was the first step to regaining glory against the Britishers.
FORGOTTEN WOMEN FREEDOM FIGHTERS OF INDIA
We can see the intense love and love for their motherland in the eyes of these women. They became selfless and gave sacrifices for the protection of their nation and they always wanted to see their nation free and prospering, all these reasons made these incredible women a game changer in the quest for independence. Here is the list of some forgotten women freedom fighters.
- 1. MATANGINI HAZRA:
In 1869, Matangini Hazra was born in the very small village of Tamluk. She was born in Hogla in 1869. She wasn’t able to receive a very proper education just because of her father, as Financial condition of her father was not so supportive. She was married to an older man and his name was Trilochan Hazra.
By the age of eighteenth, her husband died and she became a widow. After this incident, she devoted herself to society’s social work. In 1805 in Bengal, the Nationalist movement was at its peak.
She was known as ‘Gandhi buri’ as she was inspired, motivated, and influenced by Gandhi’s ideas of independent India. She followed his teachings in a very
religious way. In Midnapore, the freedom struggle became more famous just because of the participation of women. Women participated during the freedom struggle in very large numbers.
She was jailed, and there she met various political prisoners and got more detailed information regarding the freedom struggle. After getting released, she became a very active member of the Indian National Congress and she started spinning her own Khadi.
- 2. KANAKLATA BARUA
Kanaklata Barua also played a very major role in Freedom Struggle. When men were getting arrested for taking part in the freedom struggle. At that time, women came out of their houses to take part in the freedom struggle. She was born on 22nd December 1924, in a very small village in the Sonitpur district. She was considered as the youngest female fighter during the freedom struggle in Assam.
She was just seventeen years old and she got inspired by Gandhi Ji. She was inspired by Gandhi’s idea of the Quit India Movement. Her dream was to join Azad Hind Fauj, but because of her age, she wasn’t able to take part in the Azad Hind Fauj.
Her mother passed away when she was just five years old and because of that, she developed the notion of responsibility. When she was just thirteen, her father also died but before dying, he got remarried. She left school after the third class because of this whole scenario and she wasn’t able to get a proper education.
After the massacre of 1919, the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. The freedom movement spirit got spread nationwide. To get Swaraj, Gandhi started the Non-Cooperation Movement and which influenced a lot of people. Kanaklata joined Mrityu Bahini, it’s a death and suicide squad.
After looking at her zeal for the motherland, she was accepted. After the death of Kushal Konwar, Kanaklata took further steps and proceeded with the members of Mrityu Bahini. She marched with a flag in her hand.
- 3. BEGUM HAZRAT MAHAL
This is the name of a woman; about whom we hear a lot in Lucknow. She is remembered as the queen, and mother and she is also seen as a symbol of resistance during the freedom struggle. She was born in a very small village in Faizabad.
At a very young age, In the royal Harem of Khawasin, she was sold there. She was taught the various rules and regulations of the harem, and she was also trained with the royal etiquettes and royal ways.
She asked all women to remove the disunity among them and told them that al Hindus and Muslims were equal. Women came out of their Purdah and veil system and they started to fight for their motherland.
She united Cavalry, Artillery, and Infantry and she asked them also to be coordinated and united. Her army commander was a Hindu king named Raja Jai Lal Singh. After losing Lucknow, she headed to Faizabad and she further joined Nana Saheb and others.
Many freedom fighters like her gifted us our Independence by being a game changer for India’s freedom struggle.
