The Green Crackers were created by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
They are environmentally friendlier than traditional ones. The composition of green crackers includes eco-friendly components like flower pots, pencils, maroons, and sparklers, to name a few.
Why are they called Green Crackers?
They are referred to as ‘green’ crackers because of the low the decibel level and pollution-causing elements. While the decibel level of a green cracker is 110, that of a traditional one is 160. Their composition does not include hazardous compounds like barium nitrate causing 30% less pollution as compared to standard firecrackers, and leaving behind relatively less carbon footprint.
The green firecrackers fall under 3 main categories: SAFAL, SWAS, and STAR.
SAFAL stands for ‘safe minimal aluminium’. There is less aluminium and more magnesium.
SWAS is called Safe Water Releasers. They emit water vapour which suppresses the dust that is released.
Lastly STAR emits reduced particulate matter, and has minimal sound intensity. It neither has potassium nitrate nor sulphur and is also a safe thermite cracker.
Supreme Court refused to accord an urgent hearing to a plea by the Delhi government ordering a ban on the sale, storage, and use of all kinds of firecrackers till January 1. The reason presented by the Delhi government was to keep a check on pollution levels in the capital and prevent air pollution from getting worse.
State Provisions to celebrate Diwali with green crackers
Every state government is doing the best it can to ensure the celebrations do not turn it a cause for concern with high pollution levels. Regulations imposed by some of the states are as follows:
West Bengal
With the Division Bench comprising of Joymalya Bagchi, and Apurba Sinha Ray Calcutta High Court, the police authorities, as well as Pollution Control Board, were directed to ensure and enforce that there is no sale, importation of bursting of crackers other than green crackers only with a QR code.

Punjab
The Punjab government has given permission to burst crackers in the evening. A 2-hour window i.e., from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on October 24. In states like Punjab and Haryana, pollution levels have to be kept in check for the stubble burning causes lot of air pollution.
To ensure that the right crackers are being bought, identification is possible through CSIR NEERI logo.
