Since the Lockdown broke down, suddenly everything right from shopping to education switched to online mode. Thereupon, people became used to staying home and getting themselves educated. From there only, commenced the trend of online education.
Though it existed before too, however, the hype increased after the start of the lockdown.
By how much percent has the rate of online education increased?
Online education has been in trend for quite some time. People who are working and wish to continue their further studies go for online degrees for better prospects. According to the sources, the number of students enrolling for the same increased by 170% between 2021 and 2022.
In the official statement made by the chairman of UGC chairman, Mamilda Jagadesh Kumar, in the matters of Open and Distance Education (ODL), the percentage of the number of students has increased by 41.7%.
What is the reason behind the increase of students in online education?
As the UGC has introduced the option of online education for people, people prefer the online mode of education because of the flexibility, its digital mode, and time friendliness. In the year 2021, there was a remarkable rise of 38% in people choosing online modes of education overall.
As per the sources, in the year 2021, Higher Educational institutions (HEI) were offering over 42 online programs which increased to 58 in the 2021-2022 session. One of the main reasons behind increasing the number of courses is the good reviews received by the public and also people preferring it over the traditional course. As most of the crowd will be working crowd, it becomes convenient for people to do the online course.
What is the data revealed by the chairman of UGC, Mamilda ?
According to the chairman of UGC, Mamilda Jagadesh Kumar there are currently 66 HEI in India that are operating. All the 66 HEIs together are offering 371 online programs. All 371 programs are for the September session of 2022. Of 371, 136 are undergraduate programs and the remaining 235 are postgraduate programs.
Apart from these 371 online courses, the HEIs are offering 1149 distance education programs across India. This has been benefitting thousands of students. As there are distant courses offered too, in the current academic year, 2021-2022, the number of students enrolled in the same has increased from 25,305 to 70,023. This number also includes foreign students as well. This has boosted the enhancement of the education sector across India.
As the demand for online education and distance education is increasing drastically among the people of India and foreign nations, the number of courses offered has also seen a hike. It has increased from 1066 t 1078. With the number of courses increasing, the number of students enrolled stands at 20 lakhs.
Online education and distance education requires quite a good amount of internet facility. Education through the Internet makes the person avail the benefits of high-quality education available at a reasonable amount even for underprivileged students as well.
What did the chairman of UGC get to say more?
The chairman of UGC, matilda took the Twitter handle to make the announcement on October 28. It was also said that students who face trouble joining traditional schools can avail themselves of the benefits of online education.
Colleges will be encouraged to prepare themselves for modern digital content, he added.
