Gigi Hadid revealed on Instagram why she left Twitter after nearly a decade of engaging with her fans.
The 27-year-old model posted on her Instagram stories a screenshot of a recently fired former Twitter employee that Egyptian journalist Ayman Mohyeldin had uploaded.
Gigi Hadid calls Twitter “a cesspool of hate & bigotry”
She added in her Instagram story, “I deactivated my Twitter account today. For a long time, but especially with its new leadership, it’s becoming more and more of a cesspool of hate & bigotry. Only sorry to the fans, who I’ve loved connecting with for a decade via Twitter.”
Moreover, she added that Twitter is not a “safe place for anyone” and it might do more good than harm.
In her message, Hadid included a screenshot of Shannon Raj Singh’s tweet, a former Twitter Human Rights Counsel. On Friday, Singh wrote:
“Yesterday was my last day at Twitter: the entire Human Rights team has been cut from the company. I am enormously proud of the work we did to implement the UN Guiding Principles on Business & Human Rights, to protect those at-risk in global conflicts & crises, including Ethiopia, Afghanistan, and Ukraine, and to defend the needs of those particularly at risk of human rights abuse by virtue of their social media presence, such as journalists and human rights defenders.”
Responds From Netizens
Numerous admirers praised the model and agreed with her decision after hearing that Gigi Hadid had left the platform. One person referred to her as a “queen” and added that others would follow the lead in the near future.
Celebrities who also left Twitter:
Following Musk’s takeover, singer Toni Braxton recently declared she was leaving the platform as well.
Last month, she wrote: “Since this platform was acquired, I’ve witnessed some “free speech” that has startled and sickened me. Hate speech disguised as “free expression” is unacceptable, so I’ve decided to stay off Twitter since it’s no longer a safe platform for people of color like my sons and myself.”
Shonda Rhimes, the creator of “Grey’s Anatomy,” earlier tweeted: “not waiting around to see what Elon has in store. Bye.”
Sara, the star of “Waitress,” asked viewers to follow her on other social media channels.
She wrote: “Welp. It was enjoyable, Twitter. I’m out. People, I’ll see you on other platforms. I’m sorry, but I just don’t like this one.”
Producer Ken Onlin also announced that he is leaving the service and added, “No judgments.”
Actress Tea from “Madam Secretary” believed the platform had “exposed too much hate, too much in the wrong direction.”
She added: “Love, kindness, and possibilities for all of you.”
Elon Musk terminated half of the Twitter employees
Days after Elon Musk concluded his $44 billion bid to purchase the social media network, there has been a large exodus. He also made a monthly subscription offer of $8 for consumers to get the blue social media platform verification checkmark.
In a recent tweet, Elon Musk claimed that the site was losing $4 million daily. In the email that followed, he stated that the layoffs were “needed to ensure the company’s success moving ahead” before firing 50% of the team. The note stated:
“On Friday, we will begin the challenging process of decreasing our global staff in an effort to put Twitter on a sound course. We acknowledge that this will have an effect on a lot of people who have contributed significantly to Twitter, but this step is regrettably required to secure the future of the company going ahead.”
“We understand that whether or not you are impacted, this is a very difficult event to go through.”
Elon Musk added that Twitter would create a “content moderation council” to allow for a variety of opinions.
Musk notoriously made significant changes to the business on Friday, firing more than 3,000 workers.
Now, according to Bloomberg, Twitter is reportedly offering dozens of them their jobs back, some of which are being given back because “management understood that their expertise and knowledge may be crucial to construct the new features Musk envisions,” Bloomberg noted, citing its sources.
