Naturopathy and Ayurveda are well-known principles of medical treatment, a newly emerging field of study and therapy is blue space therapy which has provided excellent results in terms of healing and rejuvenation.
Blue therapy involves using water and the blue spaces of nature for the treatment of various physical and mental ailments.
We all have experienced the beauty of nature and the joy it feels when we put our feet in the calm waters. The melodious cooing songs of the birds and the sound of running waters and the grading waves which is a sensation to relax our bodies and we forget all our daily hassles and tend to relax and just live the moment and experience the beauty of nature.
We, humans, are an integral part of nature, our environment has many beautiful and elaborate colors and things which give us a feeling of bliss. We have evolved about 3,00,000 years ago we began to live in forests and grasslands just next to the rivers and oceans which made life possible on earth but with the ever-increasing urbanization and population our interaction with nature has almost dwindled.
Many studies have revealed that many mental and physical disorders have been intrinsically linked with a reduction in our direct contact with nature. Just looking at the natural scenery has been found to cause rapid beneficial physiological and psychological healing effects with positive changes in blood pressure, brain activity, and blood flow. It is found to aid sleep and improve memory and cognitive functions.
Moreover, the microbes in the environment ‘train’ our immune system, reinforcing the good microbial flora in our gut and airways. Scientists believe that humans have an innate predisposition towards the natural environment and that spending time in blue spaces is a homely feeling.
The concept of blue health emerged when researchers from the University of Sussex and Glasgow conducted studies on different groups of people and derived a conclusion that people experience happiness in the blue spaces which lower the risk of stress, anxiety, cardiovascular disease, and even premature death.
Niamh Smith, a researcher at Glasgow University remarked that blue space has enormous therapeutic powers which is so good for health that doctors should prescribe the same. A very logical explanation for this is that the watery environments are less cognitively demanding than the everyday sights and sounds of our daily lives.
The sound of water gently stimulates our senses to allow our minds to rest. The sound of river currents and falling waves creates a sound frequency that has been found to aid sleep and improve memory.
As a matter of fact, mother nature has blessed nature with mystical healing powers whether it is diving or surfing in water or just relaxing in nearby blue waters has been found to have a positive impact on our mind and body and this has emerged as a new promising field of research and therapy.
