Barbie Movie Director Greta Gerwig shares her initial worry when contemplating co-writing and Directing the upcoming live-action movie ‘Barbie’ starring Margot Robbie.
Greta Gerwig admits how initially it was “terrifying” and felt like “vertigo” to take up a challenging project like Barbie.
Greta Gerwig is opening up about her apprehension she felt initially while taking on the intimidating project of co-writing and directing the upcoming live-action film ‘Barbie’ starring Margot Robbie. This movie is possibly her most ambitious project to date. The much anticipated romantic comedy movie features Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken. The two actors created a huge buzz when the paparazzi managed to take some pictures of them clad in their Barbie and Ken avatars back in March 2022, when the filming for the movie began in LA.
Greta Gerwig was worried that ‘Barbie’ could be a “Career-Ender”
Greta Gerwig made an appearance on Dua Lipa : At Your Service podcast. Via Entertainment Weekly, Greta who co-wrote and co-directed the movie Barbie’s script with partner Noah Baumbach- revealed that she was both terrified and excited before the production of the film began in March 2022.
She said “It was terrifying. I think that was a big part of it. I think there’s something about starting from that place where it’s like, ‘Well, anything is possible! It felt like vertigo starting to write it. Like where do you even begin? What would be the story?”
However, Greta Gerwig is all praises for Barbie, as it helped push her out of her comfort zone. The Lady Bird director feels that Directing Barbie is an interesting opportunity for her, despite the herculean responsibility of bringing the iconic toy franchise to the silver screen. She claimed : “ That feeling that I had was knowing that it would be really interesting terror. Usually, that’s where the stuff is. When you’re like, ‘I am terrified of that’. Anything where you’re like, ‘This could be a career-ender’, then you’re like, ‘Ok, I probably should do it”.
Greta Gerwig shared that for Barbie, she clearly had this “ cowboy hats,80s spandex and kennergy” vision. And she felt relieved in getting a positive response for this vision from her co-producers Margot Robbie and Tom Ackerly ( who are married in real life!). Greta also received full support from
Mattel. Talking about Mattel, she praised the said Company’s “incredibly rare” trust and freedom without micromanaging, which Greta found “outstanding”. The director also spoke about how Mattel gave her access to the full Barbie archives. She shared : “ They really gave us their trust. And I think a big reason for that was actually Margot and Tom (Ackerly) and the way they also, you know, said, ‘We want to make this movie and we want to make her vision, We don’t have to make any Barbie movie. We want to make this one.”
After all of this, The Oscar nominated filmmaker expressed that she felt very much supported and also her gut feeling tells that this project of hers is going to end up in a good spot.
