On Dec 18, the demolition of two obsolete Coke Plant facilities – a Battery#6 Chimney and a Coal Tower was carried out successfully they will be replaced by the latest technology which will be more energy efficient.
About demolition plan
On September 4, 2022, the company successfully demolished a 12-meter-tall model repair shop to create safe operating procedures inside a running facility.
On November 27, 2022, the company successfully imploded a 110-meter-tall battery #5 chimneys at the coke factory.
Yesterday, a 48-meter-tall coal tower and another concrete chimney with a height of 110 metres (Battery #6 Chimney) were safely and sustainably demolished.
With these explosions, the Coke Plant in Jamshedpur Works, which has a long history of its own kind, has completed the process of tearing down its outdated high-rise facilities.
Tata Steel carried out these implosion activities in an operational steel mill, including megastructures that were the tallest in India, in a world-first engineering process.
Replacing the outdated Coke Oven Batteries 5, 6, and 7 in Jamshedpur with new Coke Oven Batteries 6A and 6B, which have the newest technology and higher energy efficiency having 1 mTPA of combined capacity. This represents a significant step toward a better future.
About demolition procedure
The demolition was carried out with assistance from Jet Demolition South Africa and the contract partner Edifice Engineering India.
A mechanical hinge was used to conduct the controlled implosion of the 110-meter-tall chimneys, allowing the building to fall in a single path with no deflection.
For dust control and vibration absorption, “water curtains” and “trenches with berms” were used. Additionally, the usage of “Steel wires mesh” stopped the debris from dispersing.
These implosions will produce concrete rubble, which will be recycled and utilised to build walls, roads, and plain cement concrete (PCC).
Drones were used during the implosion to survey the surrounding area, increase visibility, and assist in identifying hazards by accessing unreachable locations.
